onan troubleshooting help

I have an Onan microlite 2800 watt mounted in an enclosurer in the back of my pickup. I use it for shore power when boondocking with the AS. I do run it at least monthly with a load on it as Onan strongly recommends running it at least monthly to avoid problems. I was doing my monthly with the Onan connected to my Bambi and about 45 minutes into the running the ONan got to running rough and quickly died. I now can only keep it running by holding down the toggle switch to the on position. When I release the switch, the generator dies. "Ask Onan" web site just offers little help except to say bring it to a dealer. At $85/hr rate, I would like to attempt to troubleshoot the problem with the help of this member board. Could anyone help me with a troubleshooting process to determine the problem. I am somewhat literate with electricity and can use a meter to check current flow, continuity etc. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Bob Caldwell

bad gas?

is your gasoline old?

(assuming it is not a propane powered unit)

next, how old is the fuel filter?

also, does it have a low oil switch? some of the kawasaki's we have at work will quit running if they are only a 1/4 cup low on oil. or do not have them perfectly level.
