Onan Microquiet 4000 Maintenance

I just had to R&R the fuel pump on my “onboard” Onan Microquiet 4000 genset (33 amps @ 120 volts) and thought the forum might like to know my APPROXIMATE maintenance overhead the last 11 years with 1,009 hours of service:
  • Oil Changes - Once per year with 1.6 quarts Mobil 1 15W-50 @ ~$5.50 per quart.
  • Valve Adjustment & Spark Plug – Only done once at ~500 hours (need to look at them again now that I have 1,009 hours on the clock); it’s a DIY in my case with ~$10 for a spark plug.
  • Generator Slip Ring Brushes – Failed at 912 hours (kicked an “over frequency” fault code). This was a rather involved DIY job in tight quarters. Needed to purchase a Fluke 115 multi-meter (~$160) to be able to adjust the governor to set the frequency accurately. The brushes only cost ~$25.
  • Fuel Pump – Failed at 1,009 hours; fairly easy DIY R&R at a cost of ~$70.

So my costs were ~$60 for oil + ~$10 for a spark plug + ~$25 for brushes + ~$160 for a Fluke multi-meter + ~$70 for a fuel pump, all totaling ~$325. I’d guestimate that having a dealer do the maintenance would cost ~$1,500+.

Noticed that you referred to your genset as "onboard". Where did you place the genset on your 31 Classic?

The genset is in the curb side rear storeage compartment under a twin bed as follows: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f448...s-68808-4.html

Go back to page #2 of the post for more detailed photos of the interior and fuel tank location.
