New Generac Model: IQ2000

Saw this on youTube. Runs a little quieter than the Honda 2000.

That looks like a fine unit and it's made in the USA. And it's cheaper than a Honda. And it's quieter (by 1 dB, which is a just noticeable difference) than a Honda.

I wonder how they can get the same power output with a smaller engine, 79cc v. 98cc

note the double ** in the information:

**Built in the USA using domestic and foreign parts.

I think, but am not sure, that the Honda 2000 is also at least assembled in the US.

I am not flag waving here, only become amused at the claims of manufacturers to be socially correct.

If memory serves, the Honda is currently assembled in Thailand. It used to be assembled in Japan.

Re: the 79cc vs 98cc... the Yamaha 2k generator uses a 79cc engine, and they either license the design or sell the built engine other companies (I don't know which, but the Smart Tools 2k inverter generator uses the Yamaha engine.) I haven't heard about reliability issues with the Yamaha engine, though there are probably 3 or 4 Hondas in the field for every Yamaha if my casual observation is in the ballpark.

I have enjoyed the reliability of my Yamaha marine engine and Yamaha generator for camping. I don't think you can go wrong with Honda or Yamaha. They just work.

Ah, in a search of the forums I found this from Robert@honda dated 1/28/2015:

• Up until about a year ago, all Honda EU2000i generators were made in Japan. Now, they are made at the Honda plant in Thailand. If you have a serial number that starts with "EAAJ" that is a Japan-build unit. Serial numbers starting with "EAET" or "EACT" are units made in Thailand.

• While Honda is the second largest employer in the state of Ohio (the state government is #1), no Honda generators are manufactured there. Honda has a large plant in Swepsonville, NC, that makes 160~190cc Honda engines, lawn mowers, mini-tillers, string trimmers, and snow blowers. The plant will be re-tooling this year to start making large 2-stage snow blowers and a yet-unannounced generator model.

Now if somebody made a 2000 that was only as tall as a 1000, it would fit in my rear storage comparment. The 1000 works fine for me, but I'd carry a 2000 if it fit.

Now that the holidays are over the Honda 2000 are back to $999 everywhere. This Generac is still at $799.

Still weighing my options.

Will they start your air conditioner?

It didn't say if two of them paired would fire air conditioners. This would be a main point to check out before you got out somewhere and found you couldn't cool down the stream on a very hot day. Saw that happen, we had some folks come to BurningMan with brand new cheaper model generators, found the generators fired wouldn't fire their air conditioner even though the watt rating said it would. The smaller cc engine seems to be part of that starting load wattage issue. Wishing to have the Honda franchise at Burning Man, you see a LOT of little red generators everywhere.

What do the Honda's usually get down to? $899?

You can almost always find them online for 899, shipping included. All the retail outlets seem to stick to 999 religiously.

This third option was discussed on another thread and seems like a viable option - one nice feature is the 30 amp plug:

Does anyone have experience with the Powerhorse product? The price sure does appeal to me, compared to the Hondas. Two Powerhorse for a little bit more than one Honda.

I've watched some youTube videos on this new generator. I notice the rpms wander on the video with the light used for a load.

Sure, buy two...that way you can be sure to have a parts source!
I'd like to apologize if I sound cynical but most of the "knock offs" I've experienced in life don't offer the savings people hope for in the long run...

Good plan, and what I did. For less then $1100 I bought two Smarter Tools powered by Yamaha. Paralleled they will run my A/C. If one goes out there is still one for battery charging and portable electric heater. I also have a portable propane heater for back up. At 44# each they don't cause back problems. Just my solution.
