Honda EU2000i

I finally got off the fence and took everyone's advice and ordered a Honda EU2000i today - Mayberry's was out so I bought from Hicklin Power Systems in Iowa. The price has gone up from $859 to $899 delivered.

I'm in last-minute preparations for a trip - so Hicklin's availability, and the close proximity of Iowa to Minnesota for quick delivery, were factors. I hope it arrives by Wednesday!

Congratulations, Dan. You're gonna love it. Just don't forget to fill it with oil when you unpack it. It comes with a dry crankcase.

Well, I WAS going to point any other folks to a place we got our EU2000i for $850 delivered last month(May), but upon reinspection I see that they also have increased to $895. Nonetheless, we did get a very smooth transaction from Alamia.com out of Colorado; quick ship and no problems.

Oil? What oil?

ps. I really DO try to spend my $$$ locally, but $1179? Three local dealers got an offer to pricematch (despite the tax issue) but none stepped up. Oh well.

My Honda arrived yesterday (wow - I just ordered it on Friday, UPS was fast). I added oil and gas and started it up. Initial observations:

- physically larger than it looks in pictures
- not as quiet as I expected, not terribly noisy either but the hoopla on the board about it's silence had my expectations set too high
- vibrates more than I expected, at least when not under a load

My next task is to see if I can find a Rubbermaid bin large enought to carry it in - so my Explorer doesn't get greasy or too smelly.

I will power most reasonable stuff, but you can't or shouldn't expect the Air Conditioning to really work and even if it did, you could damage it from what I understand if you don't have the correct amps going to it. I think it takes 2 2000s to be able to power the A/C unit.

I tried just one eu2000i to run my microwave, did not work! Had too go with two if we wanted to run the microwave or the AC.
One will charge batteries, run TV's and hair dryer but that about it.

I plan on putting them in Heavy Duty Contractor Plastic Bags. "HUSKY" 2mil, 32-35 gallon. This should help keep the smell down.

Honda EU200i

The EU 2000 has a 1600 watt continuous rating which should be plenty to run the average microwave. What wattage is your microwave? I have a 600 watt microwave that I run without any problem but I make certain to not run too many other things simultaneously.

Does anyone know what the running wattage requirements are for an Armstrong AC unit (79' AS). Thanks,

Montanaandy

With my set up I can measure the ampere of each appliance as I turn them on individuality. Here are my results.

Converter only------------------------ 2ampere

AC fan ONLY--------------------------- 3ampere

Refrigerator only---------------------- 3ampere

AC with fan on high only------------- 10ampere

Microwave only------------------------ 17ampere

When I tested the one eu2000i, I ran the first three items listed with no problem. But when I turned on the microwave it overloaded the generator, and the overload indicator light came on and all appliances shut down. I tried the microwave only and had the same results.
The Honda has a 13.3 ampere rating

So this is why I now own the twins

Honda EU2000

I have no trouble running the air conditioner on low setting as well at the TV and lights. Fine also for the coffee maker and even my wife's hairdryer. We love the generator as it does all I need it to do.
Sincerely,
Richard

Rubbermaid bins :

We were JUST talking about that!!

How big is the generator?

Are there any other good ideas for 'smell control'? The Rubbermaid bin idea was our top choice.

I bought a Rubbermaid bin of around 40 gallons and the genreator fits inside. It works well at keeping the gas smell under control, and keeping things clean.

Honda EU200i

Hurst:

I now see why you went with the dual approach based on your useage needs (yout are correct that the unit is rated @ 13.3 amps continuous and that you would need a second unit to run all of the things you listed simultaneously). This is the route that I plan to take once I am able to purchase a second EU2000i.

Richard: I would be careful running the AC on a single unit. You might be able to do it but it will shorten the life of the generator. I am surprised that you are able to get the AC to even kick in without overloading the generator. You have a newer AS and probably a more energy efficient AC unit than the power hungry Armstrong that I have on my AS.

Trouble starting

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Help........ we have a Honda EU 2000i with approx. 40 hours. It was purchased on 5/03 and looks brand new. I always put fuel saver in it and run the unit at least once a month for 15 minutes with some load on it. It started with no problem yesterday, but refuses to run more than a minute or so and then stalls. I made sure the fuel cap is on the ‘on’ position and the fuel tank is approx. 50% full. I have tried playing with the choke and it will start only in the closed position (to the right), but the moment I move the choke a wee bit to the left, it stalls. If the choke is in the closed position, it will stall in 60 seconds or so. I am baffled. The owners manual is NO help.

I hope this does not mean a trip to the local Honda dealer, because the carburetor or some other part has gone bad.

Any advice as to what to do will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Titu

I have been planning to buy two of the EU2000i's and convert them to run on LP. Has anyone out there done this LP conversion, and with what results?

My on-paper research indicates that I should be able to run my air conditioning (2005 25' Safari) with a single EU2000i. I want to use the air conditioning to sleep overnight at a rest area or truck stop. I figure that if I turn off the converter, put refer over to LP, and don't use any other 120 volt, it should work. I'm looking for feedback on this theory.

Have you tried replacving the fuel filter? Also, fill the tank before trying to start it again, it is possible that it looks like it has fuel, but may in fact be empty.

We have had this same debate

You can run your AC unit with a single Honda 2000, but you shorten the life of the AC unit. If you MUST try this....the advice was to leave the AC on coldest setting so it won't keep turning off and on , which is what does the damage.

hi titu...

what is the units maintenance history?

still using the original spark plug? cleaned the air filter lately?

i agree with terry fill the fuel tank. are u using oxygenated gas (ethanal/methanol), this is a problem sometimes.

the spark arrester needs to be cleaned periodically. mine was very sluggish and stopped under load until i cleaned this....

big difference afterward....now i do it every 6 months.

the combustion chamber and fuel line need to be cleaned occasionally too...

when was the last oil change?

i usually run a cleaner/solvent in the gas, for a few hours just before the oil changes....

so my approach would be to clean everything, especially the spark arrester;

inspect the spark plug/adjust gap or replace it.

put is fresh gasoline 86-87 octane and try again....

of course IF you'd rather not mess with it, a dealer can do all of the above yearly for ya...

i think it's a great idea to run it monthly under load, but 15 minutes may not be enough, try for an hour.

be sure to update us on the outcome...

merry seasons...

If your research is like my experience, it will come to a head-on collision with reality. I tried running the 13,500 btu AC (no refrigerator, batteries fully charged, no other load on the converter) on one EU2000 NOT on Eco-Throttle, but running at the speed required for 1600W continuous. The AC started, but so slowly I could just imagine the insulation on the compressor motor windings melting from the excess current 'til it got up to speed. The EU2000 bogged and then really screamed, but didn't overload.

Now, when you consider the EU2000 on propane won't have the same power as it will with gasoline, you'll want to use both, with at least the primary (first started) not on Eco-Throttle.

I bought a Yamaha 2400 watt generator and it could barely hack starting the ac with no other loads. In fact, with fully charged brand new batteries, it was tripping the univoly on startup. Sold it and already bought the parallel kit when it went on sale at CW. Just waiting to purchase 2 Honda's. Anything less is just a high priced battery charger, then I would go with the most portable, quietest, lightweight and least expensive unit ~ 1000 watt range.
