Honda 2000i generator Testimonial
As Forest Gump said "Stupid is as Stupid Does". Thought I would share my stupidest ever camping experience. This past weekend, I went to the sand dunes for 3 days to ride and camp in my 25' Safari. The second night out, I had the little generator hooked up to the trailer to run the a/c. Been running it all day and decided about 9 pm. to go into town and fill up our gas cans for the bikes and gen. Jumped in the truck and as I pulled out, glanced in the rear view mirror and could see nothing but smoke. About then I remembered I had chained the gen. to the truck! I jumped out but of course, the damage had been done. I had pulled the gen. all around the back end of the trailer and the full length of the trailer on the blacktop. And it was still running. Smoking like a fogging machine, but still running and laying on it's side. Got it untangled and turned off. Checked the damage and checked the oil level. It started right up but still smoking. I think the cylinder had taken on a lot of oil and it was burning it out. The muffler also had oil in it. I ran it all night and by the next morining, it had quit smoking and was still going strong. Hope I can post the picture on it here. Only damage was where it was drug on the blacktop. I came out of this one great considering....

I've banged my EU2000i up a bit too. They are a great generator. But let me ask you, do you run the air conditioner with the generator? I have not tried to run my a/c as it is my understanding that it doesn't have enough power and will cause damage to the a/c. What size a/c do you have?

My a/c is a 11K. It is very marginal with the 2000. I unplug the refrig. and run it on gas. At first it would run it sometimes but was hard getting it to catch hold and start without overloading the little gen. and kicking off. I installed a quick start kit and it helped it to start. As long as I keep the thermostat set on the coldest settting and it does not cycle on and off, it will run the a/c. I leave the converter on also. On this trip, it only failed to kicked in one time and overloaded. I had been running the a/c fan and not the compressor and tried to start it up during the night. It went into overload. That was the night I drug it and feel like it was not up to full power because of burning the oil out of it. I let the unit cool down and later it started and ran for for a full day. As I mentioned, it is very marginal and you need to plan ahead a little bit. You will have to shut the a/c off if you want to do the microwave and then may have to wait for it to cool down before it will start again. I know I need another one but I do not plan on buying a second one if I can continue to get it to work this way. At least for awhile.

Thanks for the info. Can you fill me in on the "quick start kit"?
I have no micro in my Bambi, and run the reefer on propane anyway. Also have 11K A/C, so maybe this would work for me also.

I have upset my Honda 1000 twice now while running. As you say, it makes quite a smokescreen. It didn't seem to hurt it in the least, however. in my case, it was only upset for a few seconds each time. Hondas are terrific generators.

Dometic A/C capacitor kit for starting the ac kit number is 3102903.006. I ordered it from an RV repair center. They charged me $40. It is not a big deal to install. The shop that ordered it for me wanted $80 to install (1 hour). My son did it in probably 30 minutes at the most. The kit has wires, starter relay and a new capacitor. The instructions come with it, but here is the address for instructions. Hope this helps. It figured is was worth the $40 long shot. And it seems to have paid off so far.

What about the EU3000i
Has anybody looked into the 3000i?. It has a 30A receptacle. It is also well over twice as heavy. Looks like it should easily power the AC in my CCD.

A weekend or two ago at the WA WBBCI rally in Leavenworth, Julianne had one. I had packed my electric coffeemaker - and she had a 3000i. We actually hooked it up to both of our trailers and charged at the same time. The only drawback to the 3000i is that is quite heavy so it doesn't lend itself to being very portable. To unload and load you have to somewhat fit or have someone around to give you hand. I think on the decibels range it is about 12 db more in noise than a 2000EU. And has the same eco mode that the other Honda generators have. If you are looking for "more power" and do not want to do the parallel setup with the 2000EUs then it is definately the way to go.

Or better yet I'll just copy my reply to the other post...
I just picked up the Honda eu3000i to run the air conditioner on my 16' CCD. It's an 11,000 btu unit and the documentation said minimum amp required is 25. It's a bit heavy but my wife and I can get into and out of the back of my truck. Haven't tried it yet. We're planning an early spring trip to AZ. We live in the cool fog of the Humboldt coast CA where a heat wave is 65 degrees in the summer and we bake whenever we go inland. It looks like overkill compared to the eu2000 but we needed the juice. The DC output says 12-amps. Any tips on charging the trailer battery? Anything I should watch out for?

Jaime,
I have the EU2000i and when I need to charge the batteries I just plug the trailer cord into the generator and use the internal convertor/charger. I usually do this when we watching the evening news and preparing dinner. With my old generator this method actually worked better than just charging the batteries. I'm not sure with the Honda.

Jerry, I'm not clear on what you're telling me to do. Can you state it another way? Jamie

Jerry's right. The converter will do a better job of charging than the DC output on the Honda. Just plug the trailer's power cord into the adapter cord that goes to the twist-lock connector on the generator, and start the generator up.
While it's charging, you can use the 120VAC things in the trailer.
The trailer has a converter in it that charges the batteries, as well as supplies the 12 volts for the lights, fans, etc in the trailer when you are plugged into 120VAC electrical powre (so that isn't coming out of the batteries).

Jerry and Maurice, Thanks for the info. I get it now. Just wish I was brave enough to use the EU2000 on my air conditioner...Jamie

Jamie - You can run the ac on your Bambi with the 2000. I run the 11k on my 25' Safari. Just run the refrig on gas. It is marginal but it works for me. See my post above where i installed a quick start kit and it really made a difference.

"Brave" wouldn't be my choice of words, Jamie. You did the right thing for both your generator and air-conditioner by selecting the 3000.
