Actually noise comes from everything...and the exhaust.
Sound leaks out through cases and through vibrations transmitted into the floor. Mechanical noise from valve trains all contribute to the noise, as well as all reciprocating parts. Air cooled engines are noisier than water cooled, because they have larger tolerances (to accommodate expansion) so there's more rattle.
It's much more than just the bang in the cylinder as the gas ignites.
When you strap your generator down, you add another path for vibrations to be transmitted.
Here's another consideration. If a generator produces a constant hum, it's not as distracting as one that cycles up and down. We had to deal with a golf tournament once, we put a small generator as far away as practical (100'), but it could still be heard. The golfers tuned it out. It became part of the ambience. If it would have stopped suddenly, we'd have complaints.
