Generator Advice

Airstream Team!

I have a 2015 25 ft. FC FB... and an F-150 with a 6.5 ft. bed. Looking to dry camp and need enough juice to run everything at once. Thoughts?

Thinking about bolting or somehow securing it into bed of truck. I have a bad back and usually need help hauling it around. Gas vs propane? Input as well.

Thanks experts!

Patti

I'd recommend the Honda EU3000 as it can supply all the power you need for your trailer, including running your A/C unit, has electric start and is very reliable.

X2 on Honda EU3000. I have a 2012 25FB and the Honda pulls the a/c with no problem. It isn't even close to full load as the generator idles down after the a/c starts running.

Patti, You may wish to consider two EU2000's rather than one EU3000. The pair weigh less than one EU3000, can be loaded separately, cost less than one 3000, and offer a back-up for everything but the A/C if one of them malfunctions.

Bob662's point is taken, but if your back isn't great, I'd be wary of the two EU2000 solution since you'll have a manual pull start, not an electric start like the EU3000. You can also bolt down the EU3000 in the bed of your truck and not worry about theft.

The Briggs and Stratton 3000 inverter I bought is as quiet as the Honda and was way less expensive. I don't worry about theft either because thieves are kinda snobbish and only steal the red or blue ones lol

Generator Advice

The Honda EU 2000 gens are small ,lightweight, easy to start, sip fuel and are as quiet as you could ever ask for. They will run your ac and charge your batteries.I have used them for 5 years and would not change a thing.

The EU2000 is rated at 1600W, max 2000W. You have 30A service, which means that you can theoretically provide up to 3600W to your trailer if you were plugged in to a pedestal. So if you're connected to a generator and running your A/C, charging your batteries after they've been depleted and decide to run a small appliance you probably won't make it with the EU2000 alone. The EU3000 is rated for 2600W, max 3000W, and will give you much more headroom. Two EU2000s could supply 3600W, max 4000W which would be plenty, it would mean that you'll need to pull-start both generators when you expect to run everything.

The Honda EU3000 is the Cadillac, quiet, electric start, rock solid design, and a big gas tank.

I'm seriously looking at the Champion 3500 watt dual fuel inverter generator. Enough juice to run my AC, runs on gas or propane right out of the box, and it's $1100 at Camping World.

We're also looking at generators and solar after returning from our last trip. We were walking back to our campsite from hiking and fishing and passed a camper that was running a generator from the truck bed and it was so quiet we had to stop and talk to the owner. It was a Honda 3000. The owner selected it because of it's generating capacity naturally, but also it's larger fuel tank and how quiet it was. We could carry on a conversation, and did, next to the truck bed without raising our voices. Impressive as I hate noise and hate the idea of causing too much noise for others. He had wheels and used boards for ramps to wheel the generator into the truck bed. I wish the trailer a few sites from us cared as much. Their generator was obnoxious and the owners for some odd reason ran it every evening. I have a standard 4500 watt generator and will not consider it for camping at all; too loud. Good luck with your decision. Lots of options and configurations. Thanks for the thread.

Re, the Honda Eu 3000. There are two versions of this, one heavier and much quieter than the other. Check carefully.

I just purchased 2 EU2000's and the bridge kit online with free shipping for just over 2K. The 3000 is heavy for a 1 man lift and I was concerned it wouldn't handle the job, but sounds like others don't have that problem. My thought process was that if I just needed a little juice, I could use 1 and the 2 running side by side are still really quiet. Plus they are easier to lift. I borrowed a friends 3000 after the hurricane and almost blew an o-ring getting it in the back of my truck! Definitely a 2 person job.

The OP wants to secure a generator in the back of a truck.

I have traveled with several people who carried the bigger Honda in the back of the truck. Very nice generator, I was in Harbor Freight today and you can buy a little crane to lift it in the truck for less than $200. Or, what really looked nice, is a little lift platform on rollers that you could store it on in the garage, roll it to the truck, and crank it up to the tailgate height to slide it in.
I did go on one trip with a person that hand a lift mounted on the truck in one of the stake holes for the generator. So you do not have to lift it at all unless you really want to.

Check out the Yamaha 2400hc. Weights 74 lbs. and will run your 13,500 a/c. It has 2000 continous watts.
