Gasoline Can For Generator Fuel

Please provide suggestions and sources for a gasoline can for storing fuel for my Honda generator (will be stored in my van that pulls my Airstream trailer). Thanks, LCP

Standard military "jerry" cans work for me. They come in 2.5 and 5 gallon sizes and are readily available from off-road suppliers, J.C. Whitney, etc..

I picked up a couple of Jerry cans at NAPA -- they are a little expensive but very sturdy. I also got their deluxe spout -- well worth it as it goes in the can easily and does not drip.

Spring loaded container lid with good gasket seal. I have never encountered fumes & my first one is now 5 years old. Excellent removable spout that doesn't leak nor spark.

Those are a good can...BUT (ya knew that was coming ) the ones HD has been selling around here have plastic handles rather than the metal and they break pretty quickly around our jobsites, average seems to be around 8 months. There are several brands out there and some of the have an all metal handle. Jus-rite is one that comes to mind.

I'm no expert; but I would question the safety of carrying a gas can in a van. Are there can's that definitly won't release vapor?

I would recommend converting to propane. Lots of good reasons:

1. Safer to transport than liquid fuels. Tanks already on the trailer external to the living space.
2. Same fuel used by the camper (one stop shopping).
3. Generator will perform better. Less oil changes - less carbon build up.
4. No chance of old fuel left over from last use in generator - no fuel in the carburetor when generator is stored. (safer long term storage)
5. and on and on and on.........

what van? gas or diesel? will the genset be inside the van too? it isn't sealed tight...so already gonna smell some.

i carry the gen in rubbermaid, and the usual cheapo gas can in a rubbermaind...but i really really like that $$ can. these work well vapor wise...inside my truck shell...which isn't a tight as a van..or is it?

why not strap the gas can on the back...jeep style? are you gonna travel where open gas is forbidden?

how about just using a siphon from the van to the gen when needed? honda needs mid level fuel however?

there is an accessory fuel cannister for the gen sets...holds?5 gallons? this could be carried empty till just before needed then filler up....
