eu2000i
I have a Yamaha ef1000 generator, which is great 99 percent of the time, but I'm thinking lately that I'd like something that will run our full size side by side refrigerator (for the house)(the ef1000 won't). Can owners of Honda eu2000i's let me know if their unit will run a Full Size Refrigerator - I'd appreciate it (mathmatically it seems like it should, I just want some assurance that it does . . . especially when the frig first starts up).
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
This really depends on the fridge. Do you have more info on the fridge? Most modern fridges should run on less than 1000 watts including start-up.

if you do the math, a 1000 watt generator will supply 8.3 amps. check your frig for f.l.a.( full load amps) if it is less you will be fine. i will note, that i am not taking into consideration the surge on start up, and the ability of the generator to handle the initial surge.

you also need to consider the resistance of the extension cord. the ext. should be as short as possible. also most cheap extention cords have small wire( that is why they are so cheap).

I'm away from home at the moment but our regrigerator/freezer is your basic Side by Side 36" wide General Electric w/the Water & Ice Maker/Dispenser in the door. I had a "heavy duty", relatively short, extension chord and when I turned on the Refrigerator (hooked to my Yamaha ef1000) the RPM's went up and then shut down from "overload" after about 5 seconds. I just figured it couldn't handle the "start up", could it be something else?
Thanks for the replys.
Mark

Not having enough info I will guess the following... the generator could not deliver enough VOLTAGE to get the rotor on the compressor to start turning to full speed. Result is what is called a locked rotor condition where the rotor doesn't turn but still draws full current doing so.
In my business we call this a voltage collapse.
I will bet that your fridge draws less than 500 watts running but almost 3 times that starting. These solid state inverter type of generators can have trouble delivering voltage for inductive loads (like a fridge) when the load is close to the generators steady state loading capability.

I ran my full size, side by side Fridgidaire on my EU2000i for 6 days, during hurricane Fraces last year. It had a little trouble on eco-throttle, but not running full-bore.
I now have a transfer switch, right at the main electrical panel.

Thanks Pick, that's basically what I wanted to know. And thanks for all the other info on the mysteries of electricity, sounds like if I could "push start" my frig then a 1000 watt generator would keep it going fine.

Actually I was looking to replace w/a Honda, but it was the eu2000i which is less than the 2200w that that website recommends . . . sorry this isn't really directly related to AirStreams . . . and thanks for that link.
