Costco 2k generator

At Costco this week I took time to look at this little guy:

It is a Chinese product. I would be less reluctant to buy because Costco is very reasonable about returns.

Anyone tried it out?

Are the sound specs listed anywhere in terms of db's that you can compare to the 2000's from Honda and Yamaha?

If it almost as quiet as a true Yamaha or Honda inverter generator then you will have scored the deal of the century. I suspect however that is will be quite a bit noisier than that.

But if you can return it easily, by all means try it and report back!

That's basically the same as the "genuine" similar sized Hondas and Yamahas that cost twice as much.

Could be the deal of the century!

Sometimes the noise level when under full load can be excessive. Try that to see if you're comfortable with it.

I noticed on champion website for their 4K unit....it said "63 DB's at 23 feet"...

Which got me to wondering:

Is there a standard distance and accepted meaning when someone says "51 db's"

Is there a place that verifies these claims on the internet? Consumer reports? Who is to stop companies from simply making or fudging their numbers? This btw is a question that relates to all manufacturers not just chinese made ones...but all...

Certainly a good price. It mentions that it has a Yamaha engine, I assume this would be a Chinese copy of the Japanese-built Yamaha engine?

One thing worth considering is probable longevity and resale value. While an equivalent Honda 2000 might cost twice the price, retained value on the Honda is phenomenal. It will be worth 80% of the new value after five years, if you look after it. At the same time, off-brand generators can be difficult to sell used.

Good question about "industry standards." I wonder if there are any? In any event, a 63db generator will be more than twice as loud as a 51db one. So that "little" 10db difference would be the difference between me coming over with a beer in hand for you vs. my packing up and leaving in disgust!

The box and sales tag say 51db. It's worth a shot.

This is 600 bucks....the honda is 900 bucks...I think ballpark same for yamaha....

What about the service over the life of the unit? I have a few dealers in driving distance from me to service the honda if/when that is needed. Re-salability?

Perhaps research the reputation of quality to date for this unit...if you can verify good reputation and have an ability to get parts/repair...and the price is right....and the noise level under load is good....then go fer it..

It goes on sale at $50.00 off occasionally. Amazon reviews here FWIW:

The label in the photo says 51.5 dB - Camping World shows 59 dB for the Honda.

Maybe the catch is that neither say what distance the sound is measured at - unless maybe there is standard distance for such measurements in which case they would be comparable, I'm not sure.

I have a Honda 2000 and am very pleased with the noise level so anything still better would be really impressive!

You are right, Costco seem very good when it comes to return policy so I suppose if you found it to be too noisy, it could be returned on those grounds.

I have seen somewhat similar looking ones at our Costco but the dB figures shown were much higher than the Honda so that is what I bought.

I believe that an increase of 3dB equates to doubling the sound level.

"The box and sales tag say 51db"

Check with costco...they have an amazing return policy, but specifically see if they have it in writing about things like lawn mowers, or things you put oil in and such...they may have exceptions?

If not, get it, do a iphone app db test at 10 and 20 feet (and 23 feet?) at rated load and report back and give your impressions....

you get what you pay for

I have the Honda. It took me 2 years of reserch to buy it because it was more money. I camp remote alot, I have seen and heard all kinds of generators, Lots of comparesons. Many times people have stoped by my camp, and made the remark I wish I'd bought the Honda. Is 300. that much more for a lifetime item?

Exhaust is more important than noise to me and many people in the campground. Is there a spec that indicates exhaust pollutants?

I'm interested in this too. The reviews at Amazon state that newer version can be used in parallel for double the watts. Is this true on the version at Costco? And, does anyone know if this is a pure sine inverter or modified sine? Much obliged...

Brian.
I stand corrected, a 10db change increases the volume by TEN TIMES! So 3db is likely a doubling.

Both the older and current versions are pure-sine output. AFAIK all the inverter generators do pure-sine, but I confess I haven't paid much attention to the knock-offs other than the Champions and this one, and I noticed those mostly because I browsed past them at Costco and studied up.

The SmarterTools one that ends in Q is parallel-capable, and Costco will mail you the parallel kit at no extra cost if you buy one of the generators. The older model doesn't have the "Q" at the end. I was hoping for a huge discount on the older model when the Q came out because my Costco had 7 of the older one in stock, but I never saw more than a $50 discount on the old version, and they eventually disappeared. Ah, well... I'll keep lugging my 3k Yamaha.

Here is a video of the sound between this unit which actually has a yamaha engine in it, the honda 2000i and 3000 handi.

Its a good buy but it won't run your AC, have to still parallel in a second unit. In my opinion the Champion 3100W is still the best buy out there for 650 shipped to your front door. Fire away
