... something coming loose, like a LP gas line possible....
What about work done by an "RV butcher" ?

In 1992, we bought our 1st AS. Very inexperienced, we relied on the "expertise" of an outfit called "NJ Airstream", ex-dealer, still using the name Airstream. We had work done on the water heater and the brakes.
The tip off should had been the comment from the service man "this looks nearly as bad as the work I do" !!!!!
The name "NJ Airstream" was so impressive, we did not know anybody else could work on an AS, so he did the job.
First trip we took with the trailer, we woke up in the middle of the night with the smell of propane all inside the trailer.
This monkey had managed to kink so bad, and finally break a gas line.
We found out later he had left gobs of grease on the brakes shoes too.
I have an over-active nose, and I sleep very little when the bottles of gas have 2 or 3 days of propane left.
But, after our experience, I have to agree that a propane detector can be useful.

That is a horrible story. I'd have kicked him in the behind. Hopefully you paid with a credit card so you could contest the charges.

Point well taken. I have the other two and will be getting the propane detector directly.
FYI, note that a propane detector is mounted low, close to the floor since propane sinks.

I know this is an old post just currious if you ever got it running. I have one on a 1974 airstream and would like to get it running if its not to difficult.

This is a repair I found on a trailer I purchased from a guy named Turner, he is a reseller and I see him list trailers here now and again. He pushed the repair off on hired help. I always inspect the complete propane system on anything I buy which has propane.

We factory ordered a new 1973 29' Ambassador in Dec 1972. On the list of available options was the Onan generator. My best recollection is the price was $600. After paying only $10,600 for our unit we felt $600 was too rich for us. Times change.

How much would a working unit in good condition be worth to an interested Airstream restorer?

The 12 volt generator, was ok, sort of.

It has a huge problem, with the air/fuel mixture.

You can adjust it to work ok, at any given altitude.

But, when you changed altitude by as little as 1000 feet, the generator would not start/run correctly, unless you readjusted the air/fuel mixture again, and again.

That got old for me quickly.

Well, thanks for the responces. If anyone has any skill on these I would appreciate the info. I know it's not worth putting much into but I would like to look into it anyway. The guy I bought it from said he hardly ever used it. It won't start and I have little knowledge on propane engines. If and when the budget ever changes I might look into putting a more modern generator in if it will fit.

That engine sure looks a lot like a Briggs & Stratton. I bet parts are still available for it from B&S. You would be surprised at the parts they still make for them old engines. The thing looks like it would fit in a opening for a water heater.....

The engine is a vertical shaft Tecumsa (2.5 HP I believe) as found on many small lawn-mowers. A Propane engine is the same as a Gasoline engine except for the carb system. You can do a Google search and find many Propane conversion kits for anything from your lawn-mower to your TV.

I have one of these 12V generators from my '74 Excella 500 that I no longer want. It runs fine at my "Altitude" it may require adjustments at others, I don't know, I have never used it except for trying it out in my driveway before upgrading my AS. If anyone is looking for one to restore their unit to original equipment, make a reasonable offer plus shipping, I have no idea what it is worth.

I have the same generator in Stella (1974 31 ft. Excella 500). I don't think I want to deal with potential problems down the road so I am thinking or pulling it out. Question is: Will a trickle charger on the 12 volt work or can I take out the 12 volt all together??? Its really to bad the previous owner didn't take better care of Stella. I am finding tons of stuff that could have been avoided with some minor upkeep. I did however find a 1974 penny stuck under one of the tack strips when I pulled out the carpet. Kind of cool I thought.
