Air conditioners and generators

The heat this summer has caused me to decide to bite the bullet and get a generator which will run my AC. I have a 5 year old Honda eu20001. The choices I see are:

1. A 2nd Honda eu2000i companion generator, $1100
2. Sell my 2000 and buy a Honda eu3000 $2300
3. Sell my Honda 2000 and buy a Yamaha EF2400iSHC, $1300, which claims it can run my Dometic 13.5 AC

I would appreciate your comments and suggestions. Especially if anyone has any experience with the Yamaha EF2400iSHC or other makes.

Thanks

My vote is for the second Honda eu2000i companion.

Personally, I'd buy the Honda EU2000i Companion, since you already have one. In the cooler months when air conditioning isn't needed, you can still carry only one; but you'll have the second one in the summer.

Option 2 will cost more and it's much heavier. You might want to find someone who has one or check at the local rental store to find one, then try lifting it. That's what convinced us to get two 2000's.

Option 3 may also be a good option for you. I'm sure some Yamaha owners will confirm whether or not it will power your air conditioner.

You might want to post the brand, model and BTU's for you air conditioner, so others will know how much current you need.

Note: Two Honda 2000's will power about anything you've got.

I forgot in my post my AC is a Dometic 13.5 low profile about 5 years old.

I remember the middle Honda inverter as 3500 watts and over 150#. It looks like they replaced that with the eu30001 which weighs 77 pounds and Honda says can run a 13.5 AC

One website I went to had testimonials that the Yamaha EF2400iSHC can run a 13.5 AC*. The Yamaha website says it can't, but the Yamaha EF2800 (about 75 pounds) can. SMRP. Yamaha sent me a "special discount price" (I guess because I am such a nice guy!) of $1370.

I don't think I would have any problem selling my Honda eu20001 for $600+ which is what I paid for it.

*I have also heard people claim to be able to run a 13.5 AC with the Honda eu2000i but I kind of doubt this is a good idea.

Two Honda 2000i's in parallel run our 15,000 BTU A/C without strain. I can lift them into the truck without much strain. Good combination in my opinion.

For those who use 2 Honda eu2000i. Is your second unit a companion model?

Lumatic,
If you plan to run your AC, then you'll also be simultaneously recharging your batteris and furninshing the electrical requirements for anything else that's being powered through the converter/charger including twelve volt DC lights, etc. So, in my opinion, 2,400 Watts is not enough capicity. You'll need close to 3,000 Watts in reality in my opinion, because you'll inadvertently be running more than the AC.

Here's the whole line of Honda inverter-generators http://powerequipment.honda.com/generators/inverter-generators. The Honda EU3000iS is a better generator than the EU3000i generator in my opinion. The engine is about 1/3 larger, it has twice the fuel capicity and better sound proofing.

The two Honda 3000 W generators you've mentioned are good generaors and I've considered them both. However, I'm planning to go with the Yamaha EF3000iSEB because it can use it's own starting battery as a source of electricity to boost the total inverter output up to 3,500 W for a brief time.

Using two 4,000 W generators in parallel will give you the extra capacity that you'll need, but I think that it's too much complexity to fool with and the running time before refueling is too short.

How do you plan to transport the generator(s)?

I like the Yamaha's (and the Honda's), but that EF2800 is NOT a quiet RV/Camping generator. At a big RV show the Yamaha representative himself said so just before demonstrating it while running all the generators at their rated load. It was LOUD. Everyone took a step back, the children covered their ears. He said the factory field reps have no idea why it is always included in the RV lineup (by the marketing department).

I had used my Yamaha 2400is with the same AC on my 72 Tradewind. It's nice to carry only one unit on the road. Had no problem with it handling my needs except that I needed additional fuel capacity to run it through the night. Getting a propane conversion kit is a future consideration.

Get a second Honda to link up with the first and forget about anything else. The two are lightweight, unlike any other options, and will run about anything. I learned the hard way and have a "Like New" Yamaha 3000 sitting around my shop. Do it.
