In my experience....NO!

The VHB tape does a great job of bonding the panels to any smooth, properly prepared surface. The white finish is sufficiently bonded to the bare aluminum at the mill by Alcoa so you don't need to remove any of the coating.

I mention 'properly prepared surface' because this is key to getting the tape to bond correctly. Clean as recommended at least 3 times to be sure that you have no dirt, contaminates, grease, oil, fingerprints, etc. on the bonding surface. You should be good to go after that!

I'm an AM Solar dealer/installer, and I use the 3M 'VHB' (very high bond) tape for every install that I can. It works especially well on bare meal like Airstreams. I used it initially on the system that I have on my Sprinter roof (a 200 watt, 2-panel system with a 2000 watt sine wave inverter and 300 amp/hour Lifelines), and it holds remarkably well!! The best part is that it can be removed without leaving a trace....very difficult, but do-able.

As davidz71 said....NO LEAKS!!!! and no extra sealant required. Just clean as specified (very important) and stick it down.

I have a nice big roll of the stuff if anyone needs some. Not cheap! But definitely worth it!!!!
Hi there,

We're going to go the 3M VHB tape route for a solar install - is there a specific type you use? When I search for it I see anything from "4941", "4942", "5952", 3M VHB tapes...

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Has anyone claimed the Residental Energy Tax Credit for a solar installation? Instructions to Form 5695 seem to say this qualifies -- at least it does for houseboats and mobile homes. Just curious...

Hi, I don't have solar on my trailer or my house, but to qualify for credits I have to have an electric bill of over $150.00 per month; We don't come anywhere near that.

When I asked Roger at AMSolar he told me they are using 4950. Email from him was December of last year. I bought some for other stuff and it has amazing strength. Put two pieces of aluminum together, clamped one down and pull tested. 3/4 x 3/4 square and it started to move at about 35#. Incredible.

Nice guide here http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawe...HB%20Guide.pdf

About the only difference I can perceive is the color.... 4941 is white and 4950 is grey. I use them both but keep the 4941 on a roll. All of AM Solar's mounting feet come pre-taped with 4950. To me they are one in the same!

Tax credit

Lewster: that must be something local; I'm talking about the federal 30% credit that's been around for a few years. I think it goes to 2016.

???????????????

Yes, there is a federal tax credit for solar and RVs qualify as second homes. FL had a tax free provision for solar, but Oregon has no sales tax anyway.

Thanks Lewster -- thought so. Just didn't know if it was widely known.
