What's this thing?

I found this thing on the RS Rear. Cant figure out what its for.
I looks like it has two amber LEDs.

Taillight monitor....it is actually fiber optic not and LED, don't think LED's were in common use that far back.

I don't have the mirror extensions on my Ram yet, so it kind of suprised me when I went into a turn and seen those two red eyes staring me. I was kind of tickled to see that they work. I tried the turn signals and everything.

This is a fiber optic sensor that lets the driver see if the brake and turn signals are working, the two lights should light up when the brakes are activated or each one is for R and L turn signals, there is a small tube that runs from the back of the tail light assy to this sensor...
