Trailer charging circuit from TV

Does anyone have a diagram of the 12 volt supply to the trailer for a 2002 Suburban?

I have no voltage at the rear bumper. Fuse is good.

A diagram might help me locate the open.

Some of these use more than one fuse, and often these fuses are not installed at the factory.

Just because all of the fuses are good, does not mean the fuse has been installed .

I think for 02 the fuse is under the hood.

The 30 amp fuse for the charging circuit is in and good. I need a wiring diagram to test beyond that.

Though it might be relayed off the ignition but that did not pan out.

I have the Suburban shop manuals but they do not show the routing of the wiring for the trailer connection.

Howie: I assume you have checked with a meter that you have 12 volt power at both sides of the fuse you checked. It is rare to have a wire damage between end points, although possible. Have you carefully checked the back end outlet on the Suburban to be sure there is no broken wire there, or corrosion in the outlet itself which can cause this problem. I would guess that 90% of the problems are at the wire ends not the wire itself.

Wish I could help otherwise but my '83 suburban was long ago. All I recall is that there was a fuse for charging the trailer on the center engine side firewall but it only had connection on one end, and I had to run a wire to the battery. It was not supplied by GM in those years.

On another Forum there was mention of a Red wire and Eyelet taped and bundled under the master cylinder. I can't find it but that is a common method now days. GM used to stick the trailer wiring in the left side frame member and if you wanted to hook it up you had to fish that harness out of the frame.

In order to get power for the electric brake circuit and the trailer hot line my 08 required two elelets to be connected and for two fuses to be installed in the under hood fuse box.

If memory serves me right, this was required on the previous generation trucks as well.

You might make sure that the fuses for stud 1 and stud 2 are both in place and that the wires are connected to Their respective positions.

The owners manual does not properly cover this, and the mention above that it is very rare for there to be an open between the fuse box and the back of the trailer plug is correct.

I have hooked up many trailer connections on trucks and when there is a supply problem this is usually where the problem has been.

Maybe not in your case, but maybe so. Just sayin....

First check and see if there are two red wire eyelets attached to the front of the underhood electrical center. If not, look down further under the master cylinder, down by the steering shaft. You should see a bundled red wire taped up on the harness. The other one is taped up between the underhood electrical center and the inner fender on the driver side.

The fuses may or may not be there. Later units came with the fuses installed, but I don't remember what year that started. There is a fuse diagram on the underside of the electrical center lid. The posts for the connection will also need 2 nuts. I want to say they are an M8 and an M10, but not sure, but they are metric.

OK hurtle number one.

Someone had placed the trailer charging wire on the wrong stud and never put a fuse in it.

Looks like they put a fuse in for the brake controller but no signs of a controller installed.

I assume I am good to go from here and will install a controller.

Thanks for the help and

Looks like I spoke too soon.

There is no signal coming from the brake switch to the controller.

The manufacture of the wiring adapter has no ideas.

Brake lights work.

Could there be a third fuse in this equation in the brake switch output line going to the controller?

I don't think there is.

Playing from memory, and only memory, isn't the brake signal wire black red stripe?

Worst case, I think you could tap off of the brake switch .

On factory wiring on gm trucks I have seen problems with the wiring about 3 feet up from the trailer plug were this wiring plugs into wiring going towards front, check it there . This is after you checked all fuses both side of fuse using a test light

Thanks All

Got things working after I found that someone had placed the charge wire on the wrong stud and put the fuse in the right location in the fuse panel under the hood.
