Tail light housings ??

Hello,
Quick question on the tail light housings on my '72 Sovereign.

I took them off WEEKS ago and when I removed them I noticed they had a RH and an LH...so I never marked or set to memory how they were.

Is the RH and LH as you look at them from outside, or inside?

It feels to me like the LH fits better on the curb side and the RH fits better on the street side. I could be wrong though.

I am changing to full LED lights and they can mount up or down. The wires come out the back and go into the housing and the bulb caulks in...no rusty steel bulb housing.

As I am asking I am guessing the key hole cut out in the aluminum housing goes to the bottom, so that should answer my own question....but if you know for sure, please advise.

Had the same issue with my '72 Trade Wind. They reinstalled opposite of what they were marked (from the outside).

In automotive terms left and right is always as sitting in drivers seat looking forward.
So driver side always left, passenger side always right. So trailer terms street side left, curb side right. (Unless your in England )

I am aware of auto/motorcycle R/L as I have been auto parts sales since I was 17 off and on for 30 years.

But as Ark states, his mounted opposite...
That is what I am asking. RH "should" mount on the curb side {US curbs} and LH on the street side, but mine SEEM to fit more correctly in the opposite positions.

I hope that did not sound flippant....sorry if it did.

What I mean is, I removed and polished them at separate times, I would almost swear that they came with the one marked RH on the street side, or by auto standards the LEFT side and the LH on the curb side.

Could that be correct? It did not appear that the housings had ever been removed.

I pondered it for several days, because they just didn't work the way they were marked to work. So, I flipped them...and they turned out just fine.

Look at the lens, does it have a drain hole or slot in the bottom, or is there numbers or letters cast into the lens. That should read correctly when installed.

I am changing over to LED sealed units and they say TOP at 2 places 180* apart so they can be used with the wires that come straight out the back at the 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock.

My original lens cans were all rusted and rotted out, for these lenses you do not use the cans. I drilled out the can rivets and threw away the cans weeks ago, so I do not have that as a reference anymore.

Mine were the same way, marked rt on the left and so on.

Match up the original rivets holes and press on.

So just as a confirmation to others, it seems as though the RH and LH is not the auto standard of RH being the passenger side/ curb side and LH being driver/ street side.

As Aerowood, Arktos, and myself have all had the RH mounted on the Left side/street side/ deriver side and the LH mounted on the right side/curb side/passenger side...so at least on our 3 units, LH and RH are installed as you would look at them from inside looking backwards. Odd, but maybe an assembly line deal, or even a multiple mistake issue. Not sure, but my rivets lined up properly that way and did not line up at all the other way...man am I tired, I should have figured that out on my own.

Weddings and huge rush projects while planning and executing those plans are exhausting.
