tail light housing

I am fabricatiing a mold to make replacements for the tail light housings
on my 65 GT. As I was setting up the parts for the mold I noticed that the metal fixture protrudes past the flange by 3/8", and what will be the plane
of theskin upon installation by 1/4" Whats left of the housing seems to suggest that the housing had a fell back to it, yet that dosent seem to work without distorting the rectangular alluminum backer piece behind the skin.Did I miss something on disassembly? Has anyone done this ?

To answer my own question... After consideration and some research
to find a suitable replacement tail light, I come to the conclusion that a POhad replaced the tail lights and had to punch out the back of the housing to accomodate a deeper light fixture. Does anyone know where to find a shallow [ 1 1/2" or so] replacement?

This is the only place I know of... Recessed Stainless Canister

I put Peterson lights in. They are already to go in a plastic canister. Fit like a glove. Popped them in after I sanded the edge a little bit and put Vulcum around them. They work great. $6.00 each. The whole process of putting them in was about 10 minutes each.

Many dealers, accross the country, have the original chrome ringed tail light, using a bulb, or a later version that uses LED's.
