Switch to LED or else.....

Hi, tonight while camping in Carlsbad, New Mexico, one of my interior dome lights was going off and on. This is the front one controlled by the door switch. This is the one used the most and left on for hours. On Safaris like mine the incandescent lights are mounted with the metal reflectors touching the vinyl headliner. These lights get very hot. I removed this light fixture to see if I could fix it or swap it with another dome lamp assembly. This light actually charred my headliner and won't go back up. I will switch to LED or else my trailer could catch fire. My trailer is ten years old, so this has lasted a long time. But now I will make a change to some, most, or all of my interior lights.

I switched to LEDs to reduce power consumption, but my 2001 Safari 25 had incandescent bulbs in it for 13 years before I owned it. I have pulled that light and the one in the bedroom area and have no discoloration of the headliner. What bulbs are you using?

I had some heat-induced discoloration on Old Lucy's (2005 25FB) vinyl headliner under the incandescent light fixtures. I replaced the bulbs with LED's. I never did care for the light they put out. Back then, the available LED replacements were way too white for my liking.

WOW that's a heads up to all of us with normal bulbs ,I worked for honda as a tech for many years and had heard that when we're working on cars with the headlights on and a fender cover lying on the headlamp the plastic lense could melt, I'm sure glad I put LED bulbs in my 2015 the day I picked it up, my reason is we do a lot of boondocking to conserve battery power.

My trailer is not here, so I can't check to see. But I do not think our fixtures are incandescent. They look like small florescent lights. I have always assumed that's what they are. Bob, If you get a chance, can you post a picture of the bulb?

scamp: Aren't LEDs standard equipment in Airstream? I thought they switched over 100% a few years ago?

My overhead incandecent reading light for the barrel chair was changed out first, not bad in winter, made a good head warmer, rest of year too warm, copilot didn't object to the reflection off my head but now I have to shade the led's a they do cause her to complain that they can be seen by the person laying on couch. Maybe I can recess them by using a smaller diameter led array.

Our 2014 Sport did not come with LED bulbs, except in the outside storage compartment and the step light. I changed them out very quickly, excedpt for the closet light which rarely gets turned on.

It could be that LED bulbs are model specific.
