Rewiring umbilical

Good evening,

Please forgive my ignorance in this subject. I am new to the AirStream Community. Next Month I am traveling to Lake City Fla. to pick up a 1973, 31 foot Sovereign International. The electrical connection that lights up the marker lights and back up lights etc.. needs replacing. However as most of you know the orginal connection is considered obsolete and no long avaliable. So I contacted Inland and they sent me a seven pole round connection. I will be using a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 to tow the trailer back to Kentucky. The trailer has been sitting for over 10 years. My parents lived in it for 3 years and told me that when they bought their house and parked the trailer that everything worked. But I am expecting some things would need fixing or replaced. I guess what I am asking is how in the heck do you wire both ends of the pigtail? I called InLand Rv and they told me they were going to send me a wiring diagram. Does any one have any advice or know where I can get a complete wiring diagram for the entire trailer. Once I get the trailer home I would like to check out the enitire wiring of the trailer (I could be getting myself in trouble or over my head). thank you in advance.

Joe

Joe,

Look at this page: http://www.airstream.com/product_lin...q.html#battery go down to plugs and you will find diagrams for many years.

You're in for some fun. I did this to my 66 Caravel last year. The colors of wire on the truck - 02 F250 - new pigtail plug and trailer DO NOT MATCH necessarily (say green - green - green).

Some one here will post a wiring diagram - I do not have one. First - while you have your pigtail - look at yu truck manual and match the plug up and lay out a wire diagram through that line. Then when you get a wiring diagram you can match up the color wires from the pigtail to the correct color wires on the trailer. Not a difficult task - just mind bending - so take your time. Have a meter and test each line for connectivity.

Remember when testing - the truck and trailer must be electrically attached as the ground is through the hitch. I pulled my hair out on that one. Much easier if you test the pigtail lose (not snaked in the frame) to get your wires right then fish it in the frame and do the final connection.

Good Luck.
Mike

Mike,

One of the spots on the plug is a ground, doesn't this provide the ground?

You are correct on the colors, a 1973 trailer uses difference colors for each light compared to the current setup. The link I provided tells which color is for which light and that can be compared to the tow vehicle plug.

Not on mine - ground was through the hitch. May be different on newer years.
