Replace '73 Overlander clearance lights?
Who makes the airstream 73 overlander clearance lights? I was shopping at northern tool and came upon clearance lights that look exactly like mine. The lights I was looking at were made by a company named peterson. Could I use those peterson clearance lights? The orginal lights are in terrible shape.

Airstream sells the ones just like you have in regular and LED. They are the only place I was able to find replacements that came with a gasket. Not very expensive either - I recall like $4.50 per in regular.

Also Vintage Trailer Supply. The OEM lights are called "double bulls eye" and are standard. You can often find them at auto/ truck parts stores. I replaced mine with LEDs which had a jack at the end of the hot wire and no gasket I had to cut off the jack and make gaskets out of bulk gasket material to get the clearance between the light and skin. A gasket is not necessary to weather seal the LED unit but was helpful for the needed clearance.

You can get the LED replacements that look identical to the ones you have for about $6 each from LED-R-Us.

Brian,
You can purchase all 12 (5 red, 7 amber) for less than $30 from a truck supply house. (The marker lights run about $2 a piece)
I replaced all exterior lights, including tail/back-ups for less than $100 from local truck supply house.
Unless you're really set on LED, the original double bullseye will work for years (and was a real improvement from playing games with the originals)
Give me a call if need more info. I've still got all the part #s for the cans.
After playing games with the Overlander, I got serious with the Sovereign and replaced all lights and haven't had a problem with grounds/connections since.

Pizza Chop:
I bought two lights at Northern Hydraulics for 5 dollars each. They are the exact same as the ones on my overlander. All I will have to do is make a gasket for them. I can do that. I want to get up on top and start to get it in shape. That rain friday night proved to me I have some leaks that need attention. I was glad to put two huge tarps over the trailer because it is coming down pretty hard in Loganville.
I cannot do anymore to the bathroom until I get some welding done. I am going to yank the stove top cover off today and gather all metal parts that need refinishing. I found a place in Conyers that will powder coat everything for $30.00 dollars. I had the opportunity to see a finished product. It looked awesome and powder coat can with stand heat up to 400 degrees.

Brian,
Do yourself a favor and replace all of them. You can seal around the top with Vulkem (use a small syringe).
Next time we talk I'll tell you about the 2.5 hours I spent in Chattanooga trying to fix my right taillight on the Overlander (near the beginning of a 12 hour first day of driving to Colorado).
As for leaks, one thing I did on the Sovereign that was well worth the effort was painting the top with white elastomaric paint (Kool Seal). I sealed up all the small rivet leaks, which amazingly, tend to add up.

FireDog,
Behold!
I'm not sure of the part number for the clear lenses, but I'm sure you can get it from the Trucklite distributor.

Ron,
Working on the next Danielville, GA. baseball team? You and Brenda make great parents from what I have seen at the rallys so your kids are lucky. Hope Brenda is doing well.

Craig,
They save their best behavior for the rallys. For a more sober assessment of our parenting skills, it's best to come to our house!

FireDog,
Out of 7 live births (last 3 at home), only one occurred on the due date. One was a day late, the others were days or even weeks late. No baby yet, but she's definitely very uncomfortable. Due dates are nice, but they don't mean much around here.

Hope Brenda is doing well.

Our prayers are with you all. And I agree that to better understand parenting you need to go where the kids re in their comfort zone.

Replace Marker / Clearance Lights On '87 Excella - More Detail
Thanks for all the replies. I have attached some more pictures of what the wiring looks like coming out of the trailer and how the wiring mounts onto the light. My problem is that the replies all seem to have trailer lights that ground through one of the mounting screws. Mine DO NOT ground through the mounting screws. And there lies the dilemma. All replacements I have found so far ground through the mounting screws. I am hesitant to purchase an LED light too because I think I will be in the same boat. Does anybody know how my wiring set up works? Is the red wire a hot lead? Is the white wire a common lead? If I can’t find a replacement for these darn lights, I am going to be up the proverbial creek.

Carl--My LED replacements DID come with both pos. and neg. wires...of course, my trailer had only the positive wire coming out, so I had to create a ground to the shell! Use a voltmeter to get your polarity squared away, but I'm guessing the red is the + since it is grommeted and that follows a normal convention for wiring colors. But, still, you should check it. It will matter to the LED's. Good luck!

The new lights will ground right through the mounting screws, just make sure you use fresh mounting screws.

Replace Marker / Clearance Lights On '87 Excella - More Detail
DPeakMd--Thanks for the reply. I will be outside in the sub-zero Pennsylvania weather today trying to figure out the marker light wiring. I will keep you posted as things develop. And I just noticed I put the last post in the wrong thread. I was directed there by a post in the orignal thread I started regarding my wiring / light dilemma.

Replace Marker / Clearance Lights On '87 Excella - More Detail
Overlander 63--I did that yesterday and all it did was blow fuses in my truck. I think I was creating a ground fault by connecting the white and red leads from the trailer to the one wire from the new lights I bought. It grounded out and blew the fuse in my truck. Of course the truck has the newer smaller fuses of which I had no spares. So it is off to the local Wal-Mart today to stock up on fuses.
