Rear brake lights on in 1961 Bambi

Hello All:

I recently upgraded the connector for my trailer to connect to my tow vehicle and find that my rear red brake lights do not turn off when the vehicle is shut off. They also remain on when my battery is connected. Other than that, the electrical system works well.

I don't want to burn out the lights and I do want to use my 12 volt system so I am at a loss here.

Any ideas?

Most of the time that problem is in the trailer connector. Either from corrosion or a crossed loose wire or wired wrong. As below, brake wire on the power line.

It sounds like you have made a mistake when wiring the new plug. And you have the brake lights wired to the charge line.
You may have the charge line and brake lights reversed.

Thanks for the speedy replies. I will take it back to the shop who did the connection install and ask them to re-check their wiring.

To close the loop on this, I took it back to the shop and they did, indeed find a "crossed wire" that turned out to be the culprit. Repaired it at no charge (of course).

I had them replace the broken radio antenna at the same time and I am now good to rock and roll with my Motorola AM/FM 8-track. Now I just need to find some 8-tracks! Thanks to all for posting solutions.
