Patio Light Reflector Melting

I'm sure my patio light can be seen from outer space. I think it was set on "stun" at the factory. In fact, I think the bulb has warped the reflector. What are your thoughts? Replace the bulb, the reflector, or just use the light as a defensive weapon? Best wishes, John

This is a common occurrence for Airstream's patio light. There are 3 ways to fix this after replacing the lens. One, never leave the light on for more than 2 minutes. Two, replace bulb with a lower wattage one. Three, replace bulb with an LED one.

The other option is to your hands on a glass lens and you'll never have to worry about wattage or length of time the light is on.

LED patio light

For around $22 you can get an LED array AND a new lense, from LED4rv.com Here's the part you're looking for, available in either warm or bright white light:

LED Bright White Upgrade for Outside Patio Light 48x68BW9016W [48x68BW9016W] - $21.95 : LEDs 4, Recreational Vehicles

I had the same problem taken care of under warranty, then went ahead and replaced it with the LED. Much smaller battery drain, and little heat generated.

Cheers,
Jerry

They are bright, aren't they? Reminds me of the helicopter lights.

Unfortunately, this happens routinely...unless you can find a glass lens. We just replaced the melted lens and the incandescent light bulb with the LED replacement (lens + LED pad) from www.LED4RV as well. Good guy, that Dan.

Huey landing lights

That's right! I flew Hueys in the Army. We had to make sure our landing lights were pointed down or they'd melt they'd melt the paint. And if they were left on when you landed, they'd melt the runway or start a fire if you landed on grass. Airstream must have borrowed some technology from Bell. Best wishes, John

after melting 2 or 3 lens with the oem bulb (replaced under warranty)...

i opted to take the SAFE, inexpensive approach and downsize the bulb.

after 3 years using a smaller bulb the results were NO more melting and plenty of light.

recently i crammed one of the led panel replacements IN to that spot,

but haven't used it enough to endorse the change.

the bulb was 'gratis' so my cost SO FAR trying it is zero.

but a new lens and RELIABLE incandescent bulb are under 10$, easy.
________

so before jumping wildly about how great leds are...read what the VENDOR sez in post #9, here...

Lucy's "scare" light did the same thing. We replaced the bulb with an LED array. It was still too bright and bothered the neighbors. SuEllyn made an aluminum louvered cover that did the trick. Here's a photo.

I have been using the LED one for about 18 months. Have left it on all night many times with no problems of melting anything. I also made a cover from a stainless steel small dog bowl that has the right size diameter to go over the light with some cut outs.

I'm thinking that something like this

Amazon.com: Maxxima M42327 4" Round 30 LED Back Up Light - 3 Hole Flange Mount: Automotive

...that is designed from the GROUND UP as an LED lamp might be a better choice.

That looks like a good idea. If you do it let us know!
