Overlander exterior light not working

We have a 1970 Overlander that we just bought a few weeks ago. The exterior light above the door is not working. I pulled off the cover and there are 2 black wires coming out but when i flip the switch inside i get nothing out of either one of them. Can anyone help with maybe a suggestion of where to start? Thanks!

Mark and Bet

Welcome to the forum. A 70 O/lander! I also own a 70 O/lander. bought her in June and I am in the process of working the bugs out of mine also. Just got done replacing the axles, wheels and tires. On your light problem, if you see your wires connected all right, try flipping the rocker switch on and off repeat that several times. And check the bulb. Any othe lites out? If so might be a circuit problem, check circuit breakers and maybe fuses in your univolt, I hope you have an owners manual, I dont but i've owned 4 Airstreams, I was hoping some kind airstreamer who has a manual for a 70 O/lander would copy one for me, Anyhow let us know how you make out, And post some pics of your trailer

Tom,

Where are the fuses in the univolt? This may help troubleshoot my charging issue.

Thanks,

My first guess would be that the fixture is no longer grounded to the frame or skin of the trailer. This was the problem with both of my exterior lights.

I don't know about your model but most univolts are in the bathroom closet for rear baths and under the counter near the water pump in the kitchen for center baths. It is possible to get the owners and service manual for your trailer from Secretarial Services.

Here's the address and telephone number. I got both for my 1973 Excella for $121. Saves a lot of headache but does not show every detail as you might expect. In addition, these are not new color copies but rather black and white copies that doesn't do the pictures justice. I still thought it was worth the price.

I tried testing both of the black wires coming out and neither is attached to a ground and neither is hot so it must be somewhere else down the line. There are 2 other ourside lights and neither one of them works either so i will jsut have to trace them back. Thanks for the comments.

The univolt is located inside the storage compartment, remove the nut, open the univolt door and check the fuses

I just had the same problem. The outside light would not work, did not find any fuses bad etc. Pulled the switch, involves drilling out two rivets and dismantled the switch, cleaned up the contacts and light now works fine. Need to be carefull taking the switch aprt as there is a little button and a spring that might get away if not carefull. My switch was held together by 4 little tangs that need to be pried up. Or can just replace the switch if can find one, unlikely to find one to match I would think.

my brite ideas

I have a 72 overlander and replaced my corroded fixture with a cut-down submersible fixture from a boat trailer (any marine store). note that the AS fixture is fed + voltage and the negative is switched. consider replacing with an LED fixture to avoid burnout and heat buildup. the fact that your 'scare' lite also doesn't work suggests a fuse. good luck.
