Looking for lens...

I'm missing one of the rear lenses on my 1975 Sovereign, and have looked and searched everywhere.
Maybe one of the listees will have an idea .

I'm looking for this lens...

That's part of the tail light cluster.

Bad news...those are big time NLA (no longer available) I have been looking for a couple too, I can't even find them in the salvage yards... What I have done in the mean time is take a regular clearance light and trimmed the base down to fit. Not the prettiest solution but it works. Given the number of mid 70's to early 80's vintage units on the road, maybe someone might consider tooling up for replacements.

That particular lens falls off, because the base, in time, being exposed to the sun, along with age, shirnks.

Therefore a new lens would be of little value.

We are working on an LED replacement for that marker light.

Glad to hear someone is....I think AS is missing out on a serious chunk of the market....ever seen how much repro stuff there is for Mustangs and 57 Chevys now we need that for Airstreams.

Please let us know when they are ready!

Ok, here is my temp fix to the problem.

I went to Wal Mart and bought two inexpensive trailer lights that look like this.

Trimmed the bottom of each like this...

And the final result looks like this...

Not perfect, but better than nothing.

Steve at Airstream Dreams will be able to fix you up with a new lens. Two years ago he offered to have a mold made for mine if I sent him a good lens. I of course agreed. He is a great source for vintage parts.

Reproduction lens that are used for safety and/or identification, must be originals, not reproductions.

DOT spells that out "very clear".

I'd love to read up on this, can you tell me more information like the DOT publication and section number? I restore a lot of old vehicles and have always used reproduction lenses when nessesary. I didn't realize this was illegal. My vehicles have always passed DOT inspections.

Let me see if I have this clear. The DOT would prefer a strip of red tape or tissue paper covering the light cavity than using a reproduction lens. Further would not any replacement lens be a reproduction and not the original? I will loose no sleep over fears that the DOT will come knocking down my door due to to the lens from Airstream Dreams which safely informs drivers behind me that I intend to stop, turn, or am there.

How can Reproductions be originals and not reproductions?

Will those reproduction lenses be illegal since they will not be original?

Send a message via MSN to Airstream 1975!
What about an original reproduction of an original?

Careful dude. "They" might just be waiting until they catch you tearing off another do not remove under penalty of law tag from your sofa cushion.
