Re: My Fluorescent to LED Conversion Update

Al,

Thanks, The conversion looks nice. It's great to see the results. I still haven't finished my research on what bulbs to use. I may use the LED strips I already have to do one fixture. Those are the Utilitech ones. I think if I put all four strips in one fixture, that would provide a useful light output for some of the lesser used fixtures. I've seen some very bright high effeciency units online which would be nice, but they are pricey.

Stan,
In my first post, I identified the strip I used. A 5m strip, more than enough for my 8 fixtures, was less than $16. I don't think you need high efficiency LEDs, just more of them per foot. Mine were about 7 lumens per LED IIRC.

Your signature says S/OS #014. I thought you were #024?

Al,

you are correct about S/OS number. I've fixed my signature. Regarding the LEDs. I was more thinking of trying to reduce the energy consumption for boondocking. The lighting and cost for your lights is excellent.

Kelvin,

Thanks,

The lights in the first of the videos in the link to your post are the same ones I have, so it is helpful to see how the conversion is done.

You won't get much bang for your buck going from regular LEDs to Hi-efficiency, I don't think, but I could be wrong. In fact there is not a lot of efficiency improvement replacing the fluorescents with LEDs. The fluorescents burn substantially less power than an equivalent output incandescent.

I did it because the inexpensive fluorescent bulbs I bought to replace all of mine started going out after a year and only about 60 nights on the trailer. Assuming we ran the bathroom light for an hour a day, the bulbs were starting to go at only 60 hours. And the starter seemed to be voltage sensitive. If the batteries got even slightly low, some bulbs wouldn't light.

LED also come in Warm and cool colours
Warm is like normal bulb and on the yellow side
Cool is more white and like a cleaner white than fluorescent
Sometimes you can find and middle colour called daylight or natural, its colour is between the two. check the colours at your local home centre. in our house , we use both colours depending on the function of the room. warm is nice in the kitchen but cool is better to read by at a table

check out lee valley http://www.leevalley.ca

they sell LED on adhesive strips on a spool with low , medium and high density of LED.
that is the high density has the LED closer together and more intense light

be sure to test what you want to install. you dont want too much light or too little

I found the Utilitech strips on Amazon for $9.35 for a pack of 2. It pays to shop around!

hello

this is what I used in the sport 22 and home kitchen

The exceptionally versatile tape lights are available with warm or natural white LEDs in three light densities, or with red, green and blue (RGB) LEDs in two light densities to produce a near-endless array of colors.

there different types with warm or natural white LEDs
30 White LEDs per metre (9 LEDs per foot)
60 White LEDs per metre (18 LEDs per foot)
120 White LEDs per metre (36 LEDs per foot)

see here what they look like

Al,

I have experienced the low voltage issue with the fluorescents. Been on the road for several weeks, but will get back on the LED project when I get back.

I was recently at Alumaflamingo and saw one of the new Airstream's which had LED strip lights mounted under the lip of the Awning near where the awning attaches to the trailer. Has anyone done this mod? I thought it was a nice effect
