Fiber Optic Monitor

In keeping with the theme of originality I have uncovered what I suspect is the source for the fiber optic monitor. The intent is to go LED and somehow make those fiber optic monitors on either side work. Has anyone ever done this with any success or should I just buy the covers (that are missing) and call it a day.

I vaguely recall someone on these forums solving the LED-fiber optic monitor issue some time ago. Mine work but I'm sticking with incandescent bulbs.
