Has anyone installed a CHMSL (center high mounted stop light, aka "cyclops") on the 'stream? I was pondering the possibility and any reduced chances of a rear end collision.

My 2008 Star Stream came with one. It's an LED light, and it runs off the brake control circuit. I've thought about putting one on Little Girl, above the rear window when we re-do the wiring and convert all all the outside running lights to LEDs. I personally think anything that increases braking lumens is a good idea.

Running wire for such an effort would be a bear.

Vintage owners, during a reconstruction effort, would obviously have an easier time since most times the furnishings/wall skins have been removed.

Such a light would obviously give more notice to others of your braking.

Should you decide to go with the installation of one, do you plan to add it yourself, or ask Airstream to do it?

The whole idea of the higher single light was so you could be seen sooner over the crest of a hill. The inital tests were done with taxis & police cars. They had the extra turn signals/brake lights mounted on the rear deck of 4 door vehicles. I'll always drive with my lights on. Even in the daytime. The rear clearance lights will announce my presence over a hill crest in the dark hours.

Yes, the wiring would be problematic.

I thought one of the initial experiments was on post office vehicles.

I note that medium duty and larger trucks don't have them. Maybe with the extra height and the prominence lights they aren't necessary, on trucks or on an Airstream.

wiring isn't a big issue...

the high center brake lite can be tied into the existing trailer tail light wiring easily.

i had PLANNED to add this feature too, initially.

but then a/s came out with the WICKEDLY BRIGHT led lights of the classic line only...

so i just replaced the older incandescent bulb units...

these suckers are blindingly bright (see posts 11-24 below)...

and your CLASSIC unit comes stock with them now.

i also added the dot/3m red/white reflective take used by real truckers, to the back...

and some hippy DAYTIME reflectors, and other eye catchers to the back.

next up is to replace the REAR storage hatch with a LED screen so i can post messages to 'followers'...

like "back OFF sucka"

one SIMPLE way to add a higher light would be to use the led truck strips right UNDER the window/above the beltline trim....
