Brake light reflector housing '65 Ambie

I have removed and fiberglassed my tailight housings.I want to convert to LED.The Signal Stat chrome ring that houses the 1157 bulb fits flush in the recess.
The size is 5.28 in. The new Grote ring with LED is approx. 5.50 in diameter.
The ring is held in by 3 rivets. The edge of the Grote is fairly thin and I am wondering if it is possible to let it sit on the edge and attach with the rivets and seal all the way around. It looks nice and I am having trouble finding anything to fit the 5.28 recess.
