Best wire connector for 12 gauge stranded wire

Hi,
I am about to rewire my 1964 Safari. I am using 12/2 gauge stranded marine wire for the 12 volt and 12/3 stranded marine wire for the 120 volt.
Some say you should not use wire nuts to make the connections. Closed end crimped wire connectors should be used.
Not sure what to do, and what size closed end connectors would I need.

Joe, in our 2010 Airstream I have found nylon crimp caps used by the factory.

I don't use wire nuts.
For 12V I use 3M crimp butt connectors with heat shrink.

I prefer to use these terminal blocks for AC wiring with stranded wire.

I would suggest you consult with Lewster for his advice.

I generally prefer to solder connections and insulate with shrink tube.

If you want to use crimp type connectors, I believe there are some with a gel inside that reduces chances of corrosion, especially if used in exposed areas such as feed wires for electric brakes. Never tried them but that is what I would look for.

In trouble-shooting things that were not working on trailers, I have often found the problem to be old crimp connectors and wire nuts that were full of corrosion and as a result were open circuit - the connections pretty much just fell apart when touched.

The heat shrink, self sealing butt connectors are an excellent choice. We have been using these professionaly for almost 30 years. When fitted correctly the failure rate is zero.
For DIY use you don't need the special die-set crimpers, just a standard stripper/crimper will do. Don't over crimp, or pierce the outer tubing. Apply heat and that splice will never come apart.

I like to use metal crimp connections insulated after crimping with shrink sleeving or electrical tape.

But to tell you the truth, both of our Airstreams (1960 and 1980 models) have been full of wire nut connections from the factory (and/or previous owners) and I have never seen one fail.
