I have to leave to run some errands, when I come back I will post some pictures. Maybe that will help too.

one rare possibility is that a filament has broken in a bulb and shorted to the other filament.

I agree with Ricky here, I didn't think about this possibility. It has been known to happen also even with the bulbs being new it is possible. It may also have a manufacturing defect, but if you try 2 or 3 bulbs and the same problem occurs then the prob lies else where. The chances of getting multiple bad bulbs rare.

One other thing I just thought about is the socket itself. Age and heat may have cooked the insulation on the wires going into the back and the wires may be touching together. This won't be a short to ground to blow a fuse but will cause other lights to work when they shouldn't be.

Ok, now we have another issue. We also replaced the fuse panel and we have something wrong there. When we hooked up the battery we get all the exterior trailer lights on too.

What did we do wrong??

My husband had the exterior lights wired into the fuse panel according to the panel schematics from the old panel.

After taking these lights off the fuse panel everything works fine - except the brake lights which still don't come on. Are the exterior lights NOT supposed to be wired into the fuse panel??

mustang - yes, it sure is. Especially from someone who bought this two years ago and has never got to use it; and is sooooo close to being able to!

My trailer is not wired to the fuse panel either. Most trailers use the tow veh fuse panel to protect the circuit. My schedmatic although a 69 has the wires riun from the 7 way plug to the light assemblys strait through. You say you have turn signals now? and runnig lights? 2 or 4 running lights? The brake light and turn signal run through the same wires(red and Brown). Check to see if you have brake lights on the truck. There may have been a fuse in the truck for brakes blow when dealing with the battery in the trailer.

When we bought this the lights were not working; likely because they had them wired to the fuse box as well.

The only issue now is the brake light. Hubby was just installing the prodigy unit and while we clearly have power to the brake light/turn light, the brake lights are not coming on when he uses the brakes.

I'll have him check the fuses again; we have blown a lot of them in the last 24 hours!

Ok, we are down to this: our tow vehicle is a 1999 GMC 1 ton van. From the vehicle to the pig tail we have one wire for brake lights, one for right turn, one for left turn. But the AS uses brakes combined with turn signals.

Hubby thinks he has this figured out: he will wire the two brake lights together in the rear and then run the both of them from the one pig tail outlet. He says he thinks this is the only way to get both brake lights on at the same time, and no turn signals with them. Now we know that some PO mucked around back there because they cut the wires to the outermost lights.

I know that work was done at the front of the unit and like us, I bet they rewired the rear lights onto the fuse panel and then went crazy trying to figure out why they didn't work. So they ran amuck with the lights rewiring and cutting as well in a vain effort to get them to work again. I believe that the PO bought this to fix up and gave up on it. What he did do was a big mess and all had to be torn back out. He did make one good decision: to give up and sell the unit.

We are done for the night, in the AM he will try this and see what happens; in the mean time, if anyone knows if this sounds right please let me know.

you have anti lock brakes and you cannot just wire them together. You will create bigger problems.

I split this in to many replies because I was hopeing to catch you. You have or need to buy I think it is called an amplifier??or resister box. Then you wire all your wires into this unit then on the other side you have wires coming out, Those wires and there colors match the trailer wires and are real easy to hook up.When you said you tow vehicle I remeberd my CHevy van. I lost brake lights and it was because that box burned out. It was about $20.00 at the RV store

This is a pic off all data for 99 1 ton van. I didn't realize that gm had gone to what the Japanese manufacturers have been doing forever. You need a 5 to 4 wire convertor to wire the truck to the 7 way plug or add and extra light to trailer on each side.LOL We have been puting these convertors on forever as the Japanese vehicles have had seperate turn signal light from the brake lights. One wire for brake light, one for each turn signal, one for running, and one ground( makes five wires ) going into convertor. A ground and three others come out,One for left turn/brake,one for rt turn/brake, and one running.
