I found a LED unit that is about the same diameter of the original tailight on my 71. Has anybody done this update? Specifically, any suggestions about how to attach/ mount the LED unit in the 71 tailight housing?

I can not recommend the method I used but here it is...
I hand-fitted red LED pucks in the existing aluminum housings - took a power sander to the plastic and got the discs to fit square relative to the bumper.
I also removed the back-up lights and replaced with identical red running-stop-turn signal units so am trying a back-up light idea of using eBay cast aluminum AS marker lights put down low so I can see the bumper area better.
I had access to the reverse of the cast taillight assembly and cut away the bottoms of the cup - to weatherproof and make them theft resistant I've caulked them in place using (gasp) silicone caulk....
