1972 Trade Wind Step Light
anyone know a source for a 1972 Trade Wind step light. Looks like a lense with a bulb is attached to an alluminum housing.

The light socket on the inside is just a single post baynont type socket that should be availabe at most autoparts stores. I believe it is held on with one rivet. I converted mine over to LED

Step Light
Mine didn't work on my Tradewind. Had to rewire power to the switch and track it down with a voltmeter.

Does your housing still have the lens? If not, you can buy cheap ones at Airstream parts stores but they are very cheap and like $16. I'm going to make mine out of plexiglass

I also had a switch problem with mine. I noticed that the scare light and the door light use different grounds. Once I insulated the socket from the body and replaced the switch it worked like a champ. It took a bit to figure out what was good and what was needing replacing.
The LED sounds like a great idea

How do you change the bulb in the step light? And what type bulb is its replacement? There are three screws visible on the outside. If one does have to unscrew it each time to change the bulb, does it have to be resealed each time? Thanks. Jack

Jack.
DO NOT seal the step light lens.
The correct bulb is 1141 or 1141F (frosted)

The step light is over the door. The round light is called a "scare light".

Our 71 25' Tradewind doesn't have a scarelight, as least as far as I can tell. What do they look like, and where are they?

Bart,
The scare light is large and round and located on the curbside front, forward of the door. You can see a pic of one of these lights on the featured pic in my blog. It's to the left of my head.

Scare Light
The switch for it is almost directly behind it, on mine behind the curtains above the folding table. (72 TW)

I made a lens for the step light by using an old milk carton and cutting a lens out of that. Cheap and it works. Has a nice frosty look about it. I also put a lower wattage Type 93 bulb in mine that puts off little heat.

help
ok, older thread, my over the door light works, then doesn't. it seems very tempermental. questions? Does the light socket need to be attached to the Almn cover to ground it correctly? If I change out the socket and bulb, which is positive the black or white wire? does Airstreams repalcement fixture have the socket too? MPJ

White is generally ground and black is the positive. I only had a hot/black wire coming through the skin on the ’72. If the PO hadn’t removed the socket and put in a cheap tube type bulb and socket I could definitely tell you the light grounded through the housing.
If I remember right there is a connector behind the grommet. Could be corroded.
However I did find that a slightly cut down, dual bulb, marker light backing plate epoxied in the housing very nicely and puts out a nice light through a new frosted plexi lens.
Tom.
