1971 safari tailight removal?

Im trying to remove the safaris tailight so that I can polish it abit-do I just drill out the rivets? Its hard to believe that thats all that holds the assemy in.

I think they have blind rivets. When I had my rear inner skins off for floor replacement I felt them up there I think. Try to clean them in place. Robert

thanx Bertro-I guess I will tape off the assemy and try to clean it up with steel wool or maybe a wire wheel--I wonder if the individual light cans come out?--jim

The light cans do come out. I drilled the rivets then it just pops out. When you are ready to replace you can either re-rivet or just use screws.

Mine are held firmly in place by those rivets...and 30 years of rust. they ain't comin' out...not in one piece, from the outside, anyway.

thanx azfire--are you saying that the rivets in the back or the canister once drilled will reease the tail light fixture?
