1971 Caravanner interior lights

My interior lights will not work when I plug in the trailer, but when I attach a battery charger to the front electric jack wire everything comes on inside. Need some good advice, Thanks.

Is the trailer plug on your tow vehicle hot?

Bill

1.Are you plugging the trailer into 110 shore power, or the tow vehicle?
2.Did you check the fuses in the fuse panel on the Univolt?
3.Have you checked the condition of your battery?
4.Do you know that a 71 AS 7 way umbilical plug (trailer to tow vehicle) is not wired the same way as newer trailers? What year is your tow vehicle?

Your 12 volt system has 2, 50 amp fuses.

The fuse that goes to the charger (univolt) is out.

I assume you have the original Univolt and fuse panel.

I'm sorry,I read your question wrong, yes the plug on the tow vehicle is hot. When I hotwire the front jack with a battery charger or jumper cables, the inside lights come on. I also replaced all of the fuses in the univolt. Thanks

There seems to be some confusion in the symptoms of your problem.
  • Do any lights work off the battery alone without being plugged into anything?
  • When plugged into shore power is outlet to the Univolt powered?
By putting 12 volts to the jack motor you are feeding the voltage back to the distribution panel which tells me that most of the fuses are working correctly. It looks like the operation of the Univolt and the condition of the trailer battery are questionable at this time. Fuses to the battery are also suspect, but if the Univolt should still power the 12 volt items in the trailer without a battery (not recommended).
