1960 Safari wiring questions
Hi there folks,
So I finally got the floor all torn out tomorrow is getting the belly pan off fun stuff...So I noticed that I can see most of my wiring now that the lower panels are all off. I looked at the trailer to TV connector and the wires are a mess( I'll Have pics up later) I can see where they all go but how do I know if its right . The lights on this AS never worked for us. Is there a diagram for the turn,brake & parking lights oh and I definetly have no clue on how the trailer brakes work through the connector to my truck Well Iknow i'm thinking far ahead but I just want to be prepared when the time comes to start putting on lower panels....

There is no better time to work on the electrical than when you can get to the wires.
I'm not so sure that I would not replace all the wires if all the panels were off to where I could get to them all. I would also go with a new panel box.

Dan, I'm considering putting in a 7 way socket on the trailer and then making a custom cable from my tow vehicle connection to the socket on the trailer. Have you ever seen of a stainless 7 way socket? or do I have to go with plastic?

Hi Augier, I havent found any wiring diagrams for my 60 eather. I had to use a 12v supply and hook up different wires to see what works. Pictures would be great.
This my help.
7 Way Systems
Round 2" diameter connector allows additional pin for auxiliary 12 volt power or backup lights. Uses: heavy duty landscaping trailer, car trailer, boat trailers, horse trailer, travel trailer, construction trailer, etc. Check with a test light or VOM.

blade vs. round connectors
Check out what Andy had to say, and recommend, on the choice of connectors. If your at the beginning of your project it may influence your choice. He had good reasoning as to why go with round....based on experience.

My mess
Ok so here's a pic of the back of all the wires which are all the same color....the connector on the TV is a old school flat four .. Can I run the AS brakes with that or do I have to get something else for that ? Thanks.

The flat four connectors do not have a brake line or a charge line. The flat four only will only provide power to the trailer lights (running, left turn, right turn, and brake lights). You will need to run a few more lines, install a brake controller and a seven pin connector.

Messy for sure!
That looks allot like what I had on my 60. I even had all red wires and some with knots in them. It takes a little time, patience some trial and error and a 12V supply. If you really get stuck give me a shout I'm close. Good luck

Hey there Silverleeper,
You said give u a shout well I started with my volt meter running a continuity test and thats as far as I got...so how are the wired in series ? I'm kinda lost don't really know where to start on this one. I'm buying a brake controller and a 7 pin to replace the flat four on the truck. Wish me luck with that one....

Hey there,
I'm testing all the lights with a 12v supply and still getting lost....I found the wire that turns on the "tail lights" then I found the one for the lilttle lights above the big bulb which I'm assuming that is the turn signal ...or is it the running lights?
Ok on cars the tail light (big bulb) is the running & the stop (brake) light bulb
then the little one (turn signal)
then what about all the lights on top and the tear drops on the sides of the AS.....

look at the colors of the wires. They look standard.

Morning!
Give me about half hour and I will take a look at my wiring. From your pics earlier we have the same setup. I'll tell you what I find. If I haven't cut the wires with the knot on it I should be able to give you a clue on that too.

The lights you have are wired according to the ancient traditions. You have three lights filaments in the fixture, and you really only need two.
In the original wiring method, there was a six pole connector for the lights, and a three pole connector for battery charging.
The 6-way provided power for the following:
1. Ground (white)
2. Brake Magnets (blue)
3. Running lights (green)
4. Brake lights (black)
5. Left directional (red)
6. Right directional (yellow)
The three pole battery circuit (located near RF corner) was a hot and a ground.
Most modern trailer wiring circuits use a 7-way plug. See post #4 above.
You will notice there is not a separate circuit for the brake lights in the 7-way connector. Thats because nowdays the brake lights and the turn signals are combined. When you are stepping on the brakes, and the turn signals are on, the bulb will turn off and on. It is left to the observer in the car behind you to notice that the opposite bulb is on high, indicating the brakes are also applied.
What does this mean to you? It means that you can rewire the larger bulb so that the dual filament is powered by the running light circuit (green wire) and the combined brake/turn signal wire. Or you can leave the small light with the green wire in place, and just tape off the original brake light wire, using only the turn signal element of the larger two filament bulb.
You could also maintain the old style, with separate turn and brake lights. If you do this you would need to also change the standard wiring method for the 7-way plug, and that would render it usable only with your trailer/tow vehicle combination. You would tap into the brake light wiring in your tow vehicle (provided it has separate lights) to power the brake lights in the trailer.

OK, Look at your red wires and see the knots on them? This how the knots work on my 60. Lt turn no knot (drivers side). Rt turn two knots (pass side). Running lights Three knots. The other area to the left is the brakes. This is not straight forward wiring but it can be worked through.

Can you take a photo from the other side? This looks like the back side of a 7-blade connector.

Is this what the front looks like? Your trailer has a different hook up then most it uses a duel end cord instead of a hard wired pigtail. I like this system because someone cant just hook up to your trailer. You can make this cord by buying a standard pigtail and putting a like end on the other side.
