Want to replace shower drain

The gold colored pot-metal shower drain in our ’99 is completely corroded and the "cross" section is rotted away. We want to replace it. What is it screwed into? And how do we remove it without destroying the shower pan and/or breaking the drain pipe?

Any advice will be appreciated.
