using fiberglass to reinforce shower corner

hi all,
i am considering repairing the corner of my rear bathroom 1978 AS. the corner that backs up to the closet is cracked and needs to be re-inforced and sealed. after the fiberglass clothe and resin i will sand it smooth and paint the entire enclosure with a marine epoxy paint. has anyone tried this?
thanks, tuna

I have done it on several boats. You will need to grind the area to get a good bind. The last fiberglass cloth should be very fine and you will more than likely have to use bondo to get a smooth finish. I would suggest Interlux Brightside Paint for your top coat. I am currenlty repairing my sailboat after Katrina and I use epoxy resin as opposed to fiberglass just works better.

Good Luck Jim

I fiberglassed a crack on my sink in a 78 sovereign on the back side and repainted with marine paint, painted shower and tub at same time. Cracked reappeared two years later and I epoxied on surface and repainted has held up good for three years! I'd do back side if possible, I replaced shower wall (closet wall) with marlite and had to remove tub and shower wall and it was a major project! Surface repair would be my choice unless that portion can be removed easily.

yes, i plan on installing a brace on the backside--inside the closet -- to the outside wall. then screwing the shower's back wall to that and then grinding down the repair surface - then apply two or three layers of fine glass mat to the area -- each being smaller than the last. then applying enough resin to get a smooth surface or near smooth. then sand with light paper till smooth. and i'll take your advice on the paint. thanks, tuna
