Shower Removal

Happy Wednesday,
I am new to this forum and have been steaming for 3 years now. I have recently started teh renovation of a 1970 Caravel. I need to remove the shower and have all rivets out so that the top half of the shower compressed down in order to pull it out of the trailer. I can not turn the drain however. I need some suggestion on how to get the shower up off the floor and out the door...

38 years of not moving plus plumbers putty can be very tough.

if your 70 is like our 69 tradwind, if you look behind the univolt heat sheild (or if someone has cut an access through the belly pan, you might be able to unscrew the trap so you can get the tub out and deal with the drain from both sides. We were able to get ours out with a standard spud wrench with a few short sections of 1/2 steel pipe cheaters for more leverage.

On my '73, there is an access door in the belly pan. You have to drill out the rivets around the access door, then you can reach up in there and remove the p-trap. Good luck and welcome to the forums.

Need to get there from the bottom like they say. You may get an impression of the state of the floor under the shower. What are you going to refinish it with....

I don't agree about getting the drain out from under the floor. It is put in from the top with plumbers putty to form the seal. After so many years, it is difficult to turn the drain.

I removed my shower today. The drain was very tight but I used two pry bars placed in opposite holes in the drain. I gently twisted the bars gaining leverage by crossing the bars. I made sure not to break the cross in the bottom of the drain. It worked fine and I got the shower base out of the trailer. Now on to repair the cracks and paint.

Good luck and take your time. Gentle heat may help loosen the plumbers putty.

A tub drain wrench is made to fit it,it kinda looks like a barbell,has different sizes on each end that go down in the the cross bars,then use a phillips screw driver to turn,or if it`s really tight a large pair of channel locks.I`ve removed 50 year old drains from brass drains [ which are a lot harder than plastic to remove] with this tool.In the event the cross bars shear off then it is time to get out the hack saw and cut it internally back to the plastic threads in 2 places.You can get the tool at Home Depot or Lowes. Hello, I'd like to seal the shower in my '66 Caravelle. There are fine cracks on the shower floor, not sure if they lead water yet or not. But just to "refinish it", was wondering what the Shower is made of? Fiberglass? Plastic? Has anyone tried filling these cracks? If so, what did you use? I'm hoping I can fill the cracks with putty or perhaps if it's plastic, use plastic weld, then paint over the repair.

What do you all think?
