Natures Head bathroom smell

I have had the NH for the past 5 months - so I'm still finding out new things to watch out for. My install was also a modification from the norm in that we pipe the urine back into the black tank, which is merged with the gray for a total capacity of 65 gallons. Hence I don't have to deal with a 2-gallon bottle of urine every 2 days or so.

The fresh water supply (55gallons) last a lot longer as none of it is being used to flush the waste. I carry a couple of 5-gallon plastic jugs which I fill with fresh water whenever I find a spigot of potable water. Using a 4-foot aluminum step ladder, I perch a full 5-gallon jug on top of the ladder, then attach a short hose from the jug into the fresh water fill and let gravity do its job.

I have thought about piping the urine tank into the black tank but could not figure out a foolproof way to keep the black tank smell from coming back into the urine tank. How did you plumb this?

I don't have a NH toilet and don't know what I'm talking about.

Seems to me if I was plumbing a sewer line to a sewer holding tank, I would incorporate a trap in the line, even if it was a 3/4" hose. Just a little sideways "S" in the line somewhere. That would seal off fumes from the tank to the NH canister.

The urine is piped directly down without any trap using 3/8-inch plastic pipe. There is a horizonal "S" in the line, as it needs to flow through the plug placed in the waste pipe from the original toilet (which is otherwise sealed). There is no discernable odor because the fan draws air out of the NH (including both the bin and the bowl when the cover is closed).

The keys to the success in using the NH is to make sure that:

1 - the coconut coir is barely moistened (too wet will create issues)

2 - there is air flow through the NH with the fan and exhaust tubing as the composting function produces moisture

3 - make absolutely sure that urine does not enter the solids bin
