Galley Sink Paint Pealing Off

I was disappointed today to find that, while prepping my AS for the summer, the paint around the drain of the galley sink was flaking off - with one half-dollar size piece completely detached. I was always under the impression that the galley sink was some sort of porcelain enamel finish but no, it's nothing more than epoxy paint over stainless steel! I'm now beginning to wonder how I can completely remove the paint in favor of the stainless steel (aluminum???) finish.

Is it a single or double basin sink? It may be a lot easier to just get a new stainless one from a home improvement store if it's a standard size. I can visualize you spending hours cleaning the paint off, and more hours making the stainless presentable--then having something that looks like crap when you're finished (that may be why it's painted, it looks bad under the paint).
