first trip, more stuff to fix

the right hand kitchen sink drain leaked dishwater into the pots and pans below. turns out the culprit is a 1/4 inch hole drilled into the back of the drain line just above the tee connecting the left hand sink. why would that be there? could it be associated with a similar hole drilled into the countertop just behind and to the left of the faucet? any ideas?

Well, thats special. I've never run across a need to drill the drain line in any sort of normal circumstance.
Disgruntled PO's?

At least you now know what to fix...

A tap for an ice maker or water purifier?

Sounds like the same setup I installed in my house for the Reverse Osmosis system. The hole in the drain is used when the system back washes the filters.
