Finding parts to replace shower valve

I took the shower head off and found a broken part in the valve. Where can I find a new one?

Valve stem? The guts? The working parts?

Remove the old one and take it to either Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, or True Value.

To replace the entire valve is more involved.
