Does something go between the tank & toilet '77 Argosy?

my 77 argosy was gutted in the bathroom when i got it. it has the black water tank above the floor, then it has a plastic covering that goes on top of that to hide it, then the toilet. my question is if i go by all the old rivet marks the plastic part that hides the tank sits about 1 inch above the tank on the top. does something go in between the black water tank and the plastic piece that hides everything? im thinking maybe wood or Styrofoam?

yes thank you for the picture. my camera is screwed up and i was lookign for a good picture online. i would assume there is a piece of wood or something that goes between the tank and the white plastic panel you have shown there

You are going to have to find someone that has actually torn one apart. I checked my service manual for Airstreams from 1975 and 1976 and it doesn't show any of the component parts for that assembly. I know that in the larger rear bath versions, just about all of the counter tops and other large flat surfaces have a plywood backer glued to them.

well we camp at campgrounds primarily and the toilet is only for emergencys. so i believe i will get some of that pressed styrofoame insulation they sell at the hardware stores and just put that between the two.

I would use the blue Dow board if you can find it. It is basically inert and has a pretty decent psi rating for compressability.

Here are 3 pictures I took as I gutted my 74 Argosy.
There was a toilet flange screwed into the tank. Unlike a home toilet there is no wax ring. Its uses the rubber seal between the toilet and the flange. SO what ever you put on top the tank to cover it (i.e.1/4" 1/2" 3/4") the flange must sit on top of the covering.
I don't have a current picture but I covered mine with a 3/4" white laminate. Like the stuff shelfs are made of. The original was a 1/4" laminate. There was plenty of thread on the flange for the 1/2" difference. Use a pipe joint compound or tape on the threads.

Not the same make, but I have a similar set up. Mine had a piece of wood under the plastic covering the toilet sat on top. (sorry for the quick pic, the darn sprinklers came on while i was shooting!)

The black tanks threaded rim came up through the hole and screwed to the flange/rings of the toilet. Hope that helps.

can you tell me how thick that peice of wood is? also is it particle board or real wood?

Mine was 5/8ths plywood. slightly different bathroom arrangement, but really, only the tub/shower and closet are opposite sides; the vanity/tank/toilet arrangement is the same. (see pics in my photo album).

one thing I found when I tore it all apart is that my black tank is cracked at the threaded fitting for the toilet flange. With this design, all of the weight of the toilet and the person sitting on it are being supported by those threads. I don't see how that could "not" crack, eventually. Seems to me that instead of a flat slab on top of the tank, there should be a box or a table with legs, so the weight is supported by that, and not the thin plastic tank.

I don't think the the black water tank top is made to support the toilet and the weight of a person. My 64 Avion which has the toilet in the corner with an above floor tank has a 3/4" piece of plywood on top of the tank, supported by 2X4's around the sides of the tank.

Hi, exactly what Chuck said. 5/8th and my tank ended up cracked where tank body meets the threaded ring too. However, my damage was prob accelerated from being a bit rough with the removal.
