Not yet. Had a few more things to do before this came to the top of the list. I'll be working on it soon.

I'm in the middle of restoring a 1973' Tradewind and have similar cracks. I believe the material is an ABS plastic. I don't believe that polyester (fiberglass) or epoxy resins will bond well with this material. There is also a heat with polyester resins that I'm afraid may melt/warp the item. I'm looking at a relatively new product from West Systems called G-Flex epoxy. There promo includes cutting a plastic kayak in half and glueing it back together.

WEST SYSTEM | Specialty Epoxies - G/flex

This is available form marine hardware/repair shops - West Marine, Jamestown Distributors

Colonial Airstreams has an individual who is coming in to repair my crack that was created when the shower stall was installed. Suggest everyone give them a try!

I've had a few small cracks over the years and repaired them with a kit that I got from my RV parts supplier. I think the brand name was Devcon but can't remember for certain.

For more serious cracks I first stop-drilled the ends of the crack. Then mixed up the two-part resin, which I coated over the crack. The kit comes with a small patch of fiberglass cloth which I've used to reinforce cracks that are 1" or longer.

My shower pan is an almond color and the kit comes in a similar color though it is not a perfect match. No problem though since most repairs are hidden under a rubber mat, and my goal was to stop the cracks from spreading and prevent any leaks.

Smile The Repairs Begin

I'm back. Had a few things like home chores and taxes get in the way of my Airstream repair, but I made a little progress this week. Here's a look at the kit I got from Ultra/Glas, and a pdf of the instructions.

First step is to scratch out the crack. This also is when you find out if there are any chips, or if the crack is more than just the gel coat. Mine is just in the gel coat and no chips.

Next step is to sand the area around the crack. Not wanting to create a large area to finish, I wrapped a sheet of 180 grit sand paper around the end of my utility knife with the blade extracted.

And this is what it looks like after cleaning with Acetone.

I'm now trying to get the right mix of gel coat and catalyst. It's a little tricker than it seems, but I think I have the right number of drops of catalyst per Tablespoon of gel coat. Too much and it stays a little sticky when dry. Too little and it never hardens.

When mixed properly, it has the consistency of latex paint. I will probably use a small throw away artists's brush apply it.

I'm away for the next two weeks, so I won't get back to this until the end of the month. Have to get this done as we leave for Alaska on Memorial day.

I'm back and I've finished the job--sort of.

Here's a photo of mixing the gel coat. One tablespoon gel coat to two drops of the hardener creates the right mix. It has the consistency of latex paint, and doesn't begin to harden for about 20 minutes.

After it hardens, it feels sticky, but the Acetone wipe and sanding take that away.
