1958 Toilet Repair?

The foot valve lowers a "flapper plate" in the bottom of the bowl, allowing water to drop to the black tank. It's really stiff. LOTS of WD-40 have not loosened it, so I think that I should open it up (if possible). Does anyone have any experience in rebuilding this valve? I would imagine that I'll need to make some flat gaskets for flanges and flapper.

Thanks, in advance.

I would just pull it and replace the foot valve. The mineral build up probably can't be removed by sucking on the line. If that's all the deeper the pipe is, it should come out easily.

Is that valve assembly something that can be purchased? Source?

Parts for that toilet have not been available for at least 40 years.

I sorta figured that parts would be obsolete. That's why I'm curious to find out if any forum folks have ever torn one of these apart. Before I go spelunking I'd like to know what horrors are ahead.

Does anyone know the brand name of this old throne?

Sad to say making your own gaskets can work but can also be a frustrating adventure. Wishing you luck and... Merry Christmas!!!

Sould have been Sani-ware.

Well, I took the bowl off the valve. Other than one of the four studs being gone, underneath I found a rubber gasket in remarkably good shape. The flapper/valve is extremely simple. This is a testimonial to the veracity of WD-40. I shot it up, repeatedly, and, over a number of days, worked the lever attached to the foot pedal with a leverage increasing Crescent wrench. Eventually, it loosened and now works like a dream. I've reinstalled the bowl with a little non-drying gasket sealer and it looks like I'm good-to-go (so to speak).

Cool - a new flapper in your crapper.

I had some luck with removing the toilet and soaking the whole toilet for a couple of days in a barrel

Hi Bevman ~

That is indeed a Saniware and I have digital copies of all of the paperwork for this. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine found a rebuild kit for it on Ebay and that's where I got the paperwork. Shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll send it to you.
