Will my water pumped get damaged?

If I am drawing water out of my freshwater holding tank and I run it dry to clear out all the water with the pump running but no water coming out, will it cause damage to the pump.

What about starting the pump before turning the water on, will this cause damage to the pump?

Thanks,

Spencer

No, it shouldn't harm the pump. But then......what kind of pump do you have and how long did you run it dry? As part of my winterizing regimen I run the pump dry for a couple of minutes and have never had a problem.

As a matter of fact on an older tent trailer I had I forgot to turn the pump off when I was breaking camp and I opened the fresh water spigot on my way out of the campsite. A few hours later as I was pulling into the driveway I heard the pump running. It had run dry for the entire trip home. No damage, no problems for the next few years.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Okay, I didn't know if you would have the same outcome as you would running an outboard boat motor without water going through it.

Thanks for the reply.

I have run water pumps dry fairly often, and sometimes for over an hour (by accident) and never had a problem with my PAR, Shurflo, or Flojet pumps.

Diaphragm pumps are pretty tolerant of being run dry.

Impeller pumps (like a macerator discharge pump), not so much. Impeller pumps tend to overheat when run dry because they are cooled by the water they pump.

Mine has run dry for days with no problem. That happens because it hard to hear when it is pumping dry and I don't notice that the switch is on. Not a good practice I'm sure but it happens. Mine is a SHURflo Revolution BTW.
