Water pump ??? Noisey or quiet ??
On another thread I addressed a problem with the water system in my '85 Excella. Once diagnosed it was a easy fix. Now with the fresh water system working nicely I have a question regarding the noise to be expected from the shurflo water pump. It runs on demand but seems to make a lot of noise. Before the fix the system was sucking air and forced water through the faucets in spurts. But with that problem the pump seemed to make much less noise. Now that the air problem is resolved the noise seems to be more noticable. The system seems to be working as expected dispite the noise from the pump so it just may be something I will have to learn to live with.
Thanks to all for your inputs into the forums.
Roger, from NJ but in Kansas now.

We installed the shureflow pump silencer kit from Camping World and I added new rubber base I made to our system and it is really reduced the noise.

Roger,
The pumps in both our '87 and '06 are fairly noisy. We just live with it. Once they need replacing I may look into a model that is quieter.

rickandsandi,
Thanks for the informaiton, I didn't even know there was such a beast. I'll have to order two tonight. I just hope there's room to add the extra fittings and hoses.

There should be enough room for them. The thing to remember is to set it up so that the lines are not touching anything, that is were most of the noise comes from. Let use know how it works out.

Mounting the pump on some rubber washers should isolate it to some extent from the body and may help with noise. I've been thinking of doing that for a year or so, but by now we have gotten used to it. It helps to remember to turn it off when not using water since the pump from time to time goes off when some air bubbles work their way through the system.

Another issue with water pump noise is due to it's mounting - usually the plywood it's screwed to act's like a 'sounding board', amplifying the pumps sounds....
I reduced the sound to a large extent by mounting the new variable flow pump on it's own board that is then isolated from the floor board by some 2-ply foam sheeting the 'floats' between the two surfaces.
Some flexible hoses as show above completes the noise abatement project....

Mexray, an elegant solution. The screws used to secure the pump also transmit the sound to the plywood, and isolating them from the plywood is a great idea.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try and follow up and see which work the best.

My husband just installed the flex hose today and it made a big difference. He had to tie them up a bit because they were still touching things in the cabinet. He also wrapped it with pipe insulation.
I really like the ideas Mexray and Gene stated. Maybe that will be the next step. Thanks all!

We just brought our 2008 International 23D home to Colorado and I'm going to look into this sound abatement project. I assume this pump is under the bed? Or do I access it from outside the trailer via an opening panel?

The pumps are in different places in different trailers. In ours, there's a panel under the refrigerator with a heat register in it. It does not have a handle. You have to kind of pry it with your fingers on the right side and open it stretching the flexible duct. The pump is installed in a maze of tubing and in a way that it is nearly impossible to get to the filter to clean it. The best thing to do is to re-plumb it while moving it closer to the door, reversing the direction to have the filter in front, install a bypass so you can directly run antifreeze through it and the lines in the trailer without putting antifreeze in the fresh water tank. Bypass kits for water pumps are available from RV stores. Mount it on rubber and then you've done all the things Airstream should have done.
If it's under the bed, you're lucky.

Hi Jimmy, on the 23D it is under the closet beside the bathroom sink. As Gene said, it is behind the access door that has the furnace vent. It just looks like a panel, but it is a door. Pull it hard.
By the way, there are 2 small cupboards under the other closet and pull-out pantry. There are no handles on these. Pull them hard to get them open. The person who sold it to you may not have shown them to you.
Have fun!

Thanks, Lisa and Gene.
We found the "secret" cupboard under the closet at the foot of the bed - owner showed us that one. The one to its left, under the pantry, doesn't seem to want to open; doesn't seem to be any room back there anyway. I'll take a look at the water pump location next to the bathroom sink. Thanks for that.

Hi, some of these secret panels just pop off and some have a hinge on one side, so if you pull on the hinged side you won't get it to open. Hope this helps.
