Water Heaters: What fits a '66 Caravel?

Time for the old Bowen to go. Has anyone replaced a water heater in a 65-66-67 vintage Caravel? If so, with what make and model? Thanks.

An Atwood 6 gallon would fit fine, but you will have to use an adapter plate to cover the large hole in the side.

I put the atwood 6 gallon in my '67 Caravel and it fit the existing Bowen almost perfect. I only had to shave about an 1/8" at the top of the opening in the exterior skin. You shouldn't need to patch the skin like shown in Derek's photos and per Andy's post.

I installed a 6 gallon Suburban water heater and used the existing shroud. It was a great fit. Nothing at all "appears" changed.

I put the 6 gal Atwood in my 66 Caravel with just a bit of trimming to enlarge the hole just slightly. Really a great fit. I had an aluminum pan fabricated for about $75. It has a 3/4" lip on the 3 interior sides; in the front the same 3/4" lip goes down over the trailer's skin so that if there's a leak the water will run out and not get on the wood floor (That's the theory anyway). The door fit great and the whole thing looks good. I painted the door silver. The heater works great. I put the switch in the closet, with the rocker switch accessable from the overhead bin above the stove. Good investment. Let me know if any questions. .
