Water Heater reinstall

I am reinstalling my water heater after removing it to repair floors and redo plumbing. When I removed it, there appeared to be a thin fibre? gasket between the flange on the heater and the aluminum skin of the trailer. What was its purpose and when i reinstall should I be replacing that gasket with a new one? If so, what sort of material should I use? thin closed cell foam?

It's purpose was to keep water out... I just used Vulkem for a sealant when I replaced mine. If you want to go back with the gasket, I can't find one using the googles, but I'm thinking a closed cell foam ought to work.

thanks Red, I can't get vulkem around here but I have been using a polyurethane caulk that is prbly similar. Unless I find a piece of thin foam handy I'll likely just go with caulk.

Two words... putty tape (even better, butyl tape, if you can find it). I know, that's more than two words.

I use a product from Wearing Williams in Winnipeg, and used in the bus building industry. It is made by Bostik, Simson 70-03 is the product. Recomended in place of Vulkem and have used with excellent results for several years. Easiest product for availability in Manitoba.

Fastenal is where you get TremPro 626

Just FYI: Vulkem is now called TremPro, and is sold in all Fastenal stores. If they don't have it in stock they can order it in within a few days. This goes for Canada and the US.

There are many colours and consistencies of TremPro. 626 is a grey colour, and seems to be the version of choice for us AS trailerites.

It is manufactured by Tremco Inc.
