First, make sure the LPG pressure is ok.

Then make sure the orifice is clean. You can do that by removing it, and soaking it in "limeaway" for a day or two.

Then fire up the water heater. Adjust the slider so that the burner makes a little roaring noise. At that point, the vast majority of the flame will be blue. Go for the maximum amount of air, then back off the adjustment. Too much air will make the flame sputter.

A yellow flame indicates a lack of oxygen.

Andy

Thanks Andy, I am not sure how to check the LPG pressure. I assumed it was OK since my stove burners and catalytic heaters run fine.

Hooray! It's fixed!
All this trouble because of a little eight legged hitchhiker that had hunkered and built a furry little den down in the baffle. Now I know what that blue flame roaring sound is supposed to sound like...
Thank you all for your help with my water heater!

Carol

The device that you have pictured is simply a 'water heater', as it DOES NOT HEAT HOT WATER. " someone pointed out

...and what about ATM machines....since the "M" stands for machines?

Do you want a water heater in your Airstream, or a HOT water heater? Which sounds better? A water heater sounds like something for your water bed.

too much communication is better than too little, so "Hot Water Heaters" live on as do ATM machines.

To stay on topic, I'm working with one of my 69 tradewind Airstream's hot water heater now, heck, I'd settle for a water heater.

Like others, I'm very afraid of GAS, as I work on it and as I sleep with it.

VIN number is like ATM machine.

Carol, haven't seen a post for a while. I hope you still have hot water and are doping well.

Carol do rite gud and I miss her too.

Silvertwinkie absented himself after he was acting as a mod on the WBCCI website and getting a lot of flack about it.

Safari 57: last post June 26, 2011.

2air disappeared March 5 and has removed all information about himself.

I PM'd 2Air a couple of weeks back following up on a repair question from a few months back. If you were wondering ... He's alive and well but says there's nothing new to post.

Every once in a while a gas appliance does not work. Some idiot (me) removed the propane tanks and when he replaced them, forgot to turn the propane back on. The good thing about being an idiot is that the solution is easy—turn the gas back on. There are times to hope you are an idiot.
